What are the chances of a terrorist attack on the United States?

Asked by keithold (735points) December 14th, 2009

Have changes to homeland security made the US more secure? Or is it likely that Al Qaeda or a home-grown terrorist organisation such as in Oklahoma City could stage an attack.

100% – It happens every day that Congress votes.

The Chances of it happening? Sadly I don’t really think there is anything the Gov. can do to stop it from happening here, especially in light of the groups they are finding on our own soil. Hopefully it never comes to pass.

Now that they’re checking our water bottles at the airport, I think everything is going to be fine.

You mean like the one at Fort Hood in TX?

@ Kevbo… the problem is that it’s not ONLY Al Qaeda that we need to be concerned about. It’s every idiot who thinks that Allah wants him to kill Americans.

@CaptainHarley: It’s any idiot who thinks God wants him to kill anyone. I include the murder of Dr. Tiller as a terrorist attack.

Very, very possible and her is why: think about the unprotected borders of Mexico. think about the illegal immigrants that cross these borders each day, illegally. how difficult would it be for terrorists to also cross these borders unnoticed. can you tell the difference between hispanics and terrorists? no, most people cannot. the point here is that we do not know how many terrorists are already in America. are they just lying in wait to make an attack? this is another reason i feel the Federal Government has let the citizens of The United States down. the Mexican border could be the determining factor in Americas future. if you and i see this, then whats with the Feds? a long time ago, the Russians made a statement: “we can take over America without firing a shot”. does this statement scare you? it does me.

I think the chances are pretty good.

In regards to Al Qaeda on a question I asked a while back some mentioned that the US keeps the wars going in the middle east in hopes that the terrorists will be occupied with the Americans in their backyard and be less likely to plan some big terrorist attack on US soil. That idea kind of makes me sick, but I am not saying it could not be possible.

And, it seems we ignore acts of terror in other countries even when it is done in front of our embassy. All through the Obama McCain run the Republicans kept saying that Bush kept American’s safe and there had not been any attacks since 9/11 http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/09/12/syria.embassy/ why doesn’t the car bomb count in 2006

Other random terrorist actions can happen at any time and there is probably little we or any government can do about it.

@ Dr_Dredd… and you would be correct in that.

Yes…A good chance.

The chances are 100% in America or any other country, unless you qualify it by giving a time range. It is inevitable that America will be attacked again. Will it happen next year?

Chances are lower if you give a time frame, but attacks whether they be foreign or come from within are guaranteed.

The chances of another terrorist attack would probably decrease if we stopped screwing everything up in the Middle East.

50/50 chance. some of the border is very tight with sercuoity, but some of it is not.
It can also happen again NYC, they got us once there before 9–11.
It can happen anywhere any time We have to be extra carefull and keep a watchful eye on things.

The chances are VERY real… BUT; we need to distinguish between a REAL Terrorist Attack and one enginered by our own governemnt to start a WAR or INVASION…..

What are the chances? I would say nine out of eleven, or put another way; 9/11. Great question.
