Are there more burglaries during the holiday season?

Asked by my_hearts_in_scotland (267points) December 15th, 2009

Recently, there have been a number of burgarlies in town. It’s a small town where the crime rate is fairly low. Have you noticed an increase in burglaries during the holiday season, especially now with the economy where it’s at?

It is a real problem in parking lots here.

Theft always increases around the holidays.

Yep, the burglers walk around after Christmas & look for all the big computer boxes etc on the pavement. Although the rate goes up before as well. Burglers aren’t stupid, they know the houses are stuffed with presents.

Yes. That, unfortunately, is the general trend…which, as TheJoker noted, continues after the holidays as well.

Around here, yes – theft is up – so many are out of work and desperate for things to give people who never thought they would steal, are doing it in record numbers.

Shoplifting is up, and what’s being stolen is amazing.

During the holidays, theft always increases, and if you leave packages in your car in view you are asking for someone to break in. I’ve got an SUV, so there really is no place to hide bags when I go to another store to shop. I try to make trips at lunch and take that stuff home before going out to shop at another store. Even in the parking lot a our office, there were 2 guys walking around looking in car windows last Friday afternoon. Some guy from upstairs ran them off, but I’m sure that goes on more than we’d like to know.

Another big problem is after Christmas when you set out the boxes for the trash showing what’s been bought. The bad guys drive neighorhoods on trash day, just to see who’s set out that Flat Screen box, or PC box. Then watch your patterns and drop in and take what’s just been bought.

It sucks that the economy is in the shitter so deep that this happens, but it does.

Be careful with everything, and keep away of your surroundings.

Breaking and entering(burglaries) only pertain to residences and businesses. property taken from a motor vehicle is theft from vehicle and not a burglary. now that we have cleared that, burglaries occur year ‘round. i was a burglary detective for 13 years in Nashville and the burglary stats for Christmas are about the same as the rest of the year. this can vary from city to city, though. drug addicts are the main reason for just about all crimes.

Yes it does increase this time of year. My sister called me yesterday to tell me someone stole her lights off the bush in front of her house. She was so mad. She lives on a cul-de-sac in a decent neighborhood. Two people I work with just had their homes broken into and another lady I work with had her car window smashed out and some toys stolen. Her car was parked in her back yard.

I’m starting a movement here locally to get stiffer punishments for criminals who commit crimes during the holidays. That’s just mean!

I would imagine so. Times are hard and people need presents.

@john65pennington : Where I live, the crime rate is so low, our front page headline is often a human interest story rather than current events. But lately the last few days, there have been break ins and armed robberies at 5 stores, just this weekend. For us that’s big. Businesses are urged to take extra precautions. I used to not be scared of working nights, now I am, knowing that there is some idiot out there pulling a gun out and potentially harming someone just for a little bit of cash. I work in a hotel, and hotels don’t have a lot of cash. But that’s what these guys are going for.
