I recently bought a piece of live rock from a local LFS. The guy packed it up for me and i was on my way. I got home about an hour later and unwrapped the rock upon inspecting it at home i noticed something sticking out of the rock that looked like a worm. I poked it and this fish fell out onto my floor. Somehow after an hour with no water this little guy is still alive. Problem is i have no clue what it is or how to really take care of it. I tried looking on online fish stores but i couldnt find anything like it. Can someone please tell me what kind of fish this is?

Um, I’m pretty sure that the reference to live rock means it’s saltwater.
Sorry, I can’t help with the ident., but it’s a nice looking fish. The body type looks almost like a goby.
@syz yea i thought it was a goby at first too and looked up all the different kinds i could find but with no avail. I went back to the fish store today and asked them if they could tell me what it is. The person working there told me they forgot what it was called and her boss knew but he wasnt in today. All she was able to tell me was the reason i couldnt find it online is because it’s supposedly some new species of fish that’s rare in marine trade and he would be good for keeping my tank clean.
Although the mouth looks more like a wrasse (sorry, belated thought…).
yea i have no clue what he is. For now im calling him Achilles because of his red fin kind of reminds me of the greek helmets. That and only an immortal can survive what this fish went through.
Sounds like one of those things that come up every once in awhile that nobody in this world knows anything about. I do not claim to no what you have but there is many fish that have come to light that live in deep sea caves that are differant then what we know. I’ve read some that came out of Africa that went into hibernation, went into the ground, and laid there for years until the water came back and they came back to life. I would guess that it is one of the many unexplained things that is in nature that WE will never know.
Interesting! I’d send a picture to an aquarium for a fishologist (sic) opinion.
Thanks Zaku that would be much appreciated im also bringing the picture with me to work on Sunday (just got a volunteer job at the Camden aquarium) maybe someone there will know. If i find anything out ill be sure to let everyone know.
I was stumbling through fish sites the other day and i found him he is a Banded Longfin Basslett they are evidently from Indonesia and Japan and weren’t imported to this area until recently which is why it was so hard finding information. Thanks everyone who helped to try and figure out what it was.
Cool! Thanks for letting us know!
Hey, uberbatman, how’s your little (basslett) dude doing?
Really good actually. I’m surprised hes still alive since for a while when I didn’t know what he was I couldn’t really feed him properly and he is living in a tank with a spotted angler thats around 4inchs. They seem to keep their distance from each other as the angler waits for food to come to him and the basslett just hides under the rock all day so hes safe.
Yea so i had to answer you saying about how hes alive and all and he’d be fine with the angler. My angler decided he wanted to live alone, so he ate everything else that was living in his tank. I probably should have seen this coming but I really didn’t have anywhere else to put the fish so oh well, it was cool while he lasted.
Ah well its all part of the circle of life i suppose.
