So I’ve been rocking the Adobe suite on work macs for a while, and am running Ubuntu on all my computers at home so I want to get invested/familiarized with GIMP. What’s the best place to start?

Asked by RedMosquitoMM (539points) December 15th, 2009

I want to learn all the basics of GIMP and be able to effectively navigate the UI. The Photoshop transition is proving challenging.

Also, similar information on learning Inkscape and Scribus would be useful. Thanks!

Alternatively, you can try GIMPshop, which is a derivative of GIMP with GUI modifications to make it behave more like Photoshop.

I’ve heard it’s basically a neutered version of GIMP for the Adobe-literate crowd. If so, it seems like a good idea to just learn the real thing from the ground up. True?

I think its a good program to get to know. It has come in handy many times when Creative Suite isn’t readily available.Follow the tutorials on GIMP’s site, but also do searches on Google & YouTube for specific tutorials made by users.

If you know Photoshop picking up GIMP will be a breeze.

@the100thmonkey I second GIMPshop as a transitional tool.

I third Gimpshop. It has a certain prettiness which seems like a mac.
