My mom use to use the Cast Iron skillets! Didn’t the fried chicken and white gravy taste different when it was made in a Cast Iron skillet? Just curious of your thoughts on this. :-)

Yes, and I still do. (No need to capitalize “cast”, BTW.)
Yes…and I use them too. Don’t you DARE mess with my cornbread skillet!! lol
@gailcalled I swayed back and forth on the caps on it. So finally just went with it. lol Thanks!!!
Thanks King my friend!!!
Yes, and she made pancakes!
A 10-inch cast iron skillet was what I used when I learned how to cook my first meal at 6: hamburgers and home fries! I stood on a chair to see into it!
I own my own set today that I bought way back in my sophomore year at uni.
@AWESOME! I use them too. Dutch oven cooking! YUMMMMMY!
@jmah Thanks tons!!!
@aprilsimnel Wonderful!! Thank You!!!
Yes they did and I was lucky enough to inherit their best skillets when they passed.
OH LUCKY YOU Sillhouette!!! Thanks for answering!!! :-)
Yup… Still have a couple myself.
Yes, my mom did, my grandmother did, and I still do.
The chicken did taste better. because of the cooking temperature that cast iron achieves, it cooked crispier and more golden brown.
They are still the best for certain tasks. I use mine daily.
You wipe the inside surface with a paper towel dampened in vegetable oil to clean. Never soap and water; use kosher salt occasionally to scrape off particles and temper the pan once in a while.
They last for generations and incorporate a little iron into your diet. Easier than chewing on rust.
Yes and I got several cast iron pans and skillets.
sure did Nunya! don’t ever drop one on your toes! yikes!!!!!!!
@Kravenhead GREAT my good friend!!! Thanks! (((HUG)))
@Marina I know it!!! I remember the chicken and homemade white gravy the most! Thanks!

@Cotton101 HAHAHAHA! Funny Cotton!!! Thanks! (((HUGS)))
@NUNYA: How about thanking everyone at once and skipping the emoticons?
sorry Gailcalled, think that would be her business! if you were giving constructive criticism, that is cool. the way it was worded, didn’t feel that.
They used a combination of cast iron and aluminum.
Nobody has gone senile yet, by the way.
oh yeah, and my Mom still does…
NO ONE is allowed to touch her pan, ha ha
that includes cooking in it or dishwashing it!
I have one I use that has wedges for when I make scones.
Yes, my mom used cast iron, my grandmother used cast iron, and my father’s grandmother used cast iron. In fact, probably every one since the invention of the cast iron skillet used them. They are still the standby in my cooking arsenal. I have cast iron skillets in every size fom a tiny little four inch up to 12 inch, with two 10 inch skillets. Plus a double burner cast iron griddle, a cast iron cornbread skillet with pie wedges built in, a cast iron muffin pan, and a cast iron cornbread pan with little corn shapes.
Sometimes I wash one with hot water and/ or a scrub brush, but never soap. Usually just a wipe with a paper towel.
I use them and I’m still in high school. I just like using them more than Teflon or whatever new stuff they have now.
@gailcalled, all i could fine on the subject!
Q. When I respond to someone in this manner, do they automatically get notified of it with a PM?
If that user is still following the thread, the new quip will show up in his/her “Activity for You.” This happens whenever there is a new quip, not only when someone responds to them.
Yes, my mother and both grandmothers used used them and now I have a set of Lodge cast iron that I use as much. They are great; pans for cornbread, dutch oven great for chili.
did not ask for an answer, this was all i could find on your comment to Nunya about emoticons! you told me to check the guidelines on PM’s and this is all i could find. Did not see where it said, do not use emoticons!
Yes she did, my mom did and I still do. They work great for cooking over a camp fire, too!
No my mom didn’t, but I do.
Yes. I still have a few pieces. Poor women from back then. If I have to grunt to take stuff off the stove, they must have given themselves hernias!
I had a wonderful cast iron frying pan that I lost in the divorce. It was great for making Mexican cornbread.
My mom had cast iron… she was clueless how to use it. I have two and they are verry well seasoned… gotta love it.
@syz: $20 will get you a new one. Google Lodge cast iron. Or send me your address and I’ll have Santa drop one off as a thank-you for all the free vet advice directed towards HRH.
Oh yes. And so did my dad for his cornbread and to fry things in. Chicken, potatoes and onions, potato pancakes, buckwheat pancakes. They make everything taste better! I use them now.
Absolutely…I still use them today to make cornbread, and yes milk gravy.
@syz : Cast Iron can be cheap… try real hardware stores or army navy stores. Avoid Martha Stewart…
No… my Mom or my Italian grandma or my English grandma never used cast iron skillets. They used heavy metal pots, but not cast iron. I tried to use cast iron, but I just haven’t had good luck with them.
@ABJustPlainBarb Most new cast iron pans come pre-seasoned. All you need to do is learn how to use it/clean it. Never use dish detergent.. never use a scrubber….
Yes, she cooked everything in it, even cornbread!
Yes, and we still have them. Do not use them as much as we did, because they are quite heavy, and hard to use when you have arthritis. But the food almost always taste better when cooked in a cast iron pan. Good question, (((hugs)))
I have 3 or 4 of them. We use them for bacon, egg gravy, and fried chicken!
(we make corn bread in a waffle maker—- it’s fantastic!)
My mom used to. And a wood burning stove!!
I love cast iron because it heats so uniformly and still have a few pieces. I use it whenever I’m making good hearty meals and I also try to use my cast iron grill during the winter. I also have some Le Crueset – which is basically just enamel, over cast iron.
@figbash: Le Creuset is heavy enough (empty) to fend off all but the most determined housebreaker. I love them but wish that Dansk were still making their line of lighter enamel ware.
My grandmother used a cast iron dutch oven to fry the best chicken.
Nahhhh… my mom used a cask iron skillet to beat the shit out of my dad!
