What must President Obama do if he agrees to a treaty on carbon emissions at Copenhagen?

Asked by keithold (735points) December 15th, 2009

If he signs the treaty, what level of support will he need to ratify it in the Senate? If he decides to introduce a cap and trade scheme, what level of support does he need in the Congress to pass it?

Nothing. It is just fluff politics.

Like baby kissing.

Lie. But he’s clearly well trained in this. (This ability is not restricted to Democrats, by the way. Obviously the previous Administration was very well schooled in deception, too. Fortunately for them, the average American voter likes it this way.)

@CyanoticWasp, what has Obama lied about?

I know, I know. It’s so tempting to dismiss all politicians as “liars” because then you can just stand on the sidelines and act high and mighty instead of actually comparing their positions or their records and make informed decisions.

My fear is that he will initiate another Marxist cash transfer from the US Treasury to whatever entity he believes will promote his self interests.

@Qingu LOL @ “high and mighty”—that’s the politicians’ perspective of their own relative position. No, I am low and humble, and they all frequently and carefully remind me of that, when I care to listen to them.

So I can’t tell you a comprehensive list of the things Obama has lied about, because I haven’t listened to more than 50 consecutive words that he has said since his Inauguration—and probably not over 500 words in any case.

Out of those few words, let’s start with “Change”. (I’m sure that this is pretty close to the mark, but I don’t think that he had “pocket change” in mind when he made the promise.)

After that, perhaps there are the (gradually increasing) numbers of “jobs saved” and “created” by his bailout and rescue of banks, stock brokerages and other various financial institutions and the complete TARP fiasco. (This sadly reminds me of a column that George Will wrote back in the 70s criticizing then-President Carter’s temporary bailout of Chrysler. He predicted, and obviously right on the money, that “the danger isn’t that the bailout will fail, because given enough time and money it can’t fail with Federal backing; the danger is that it will succeed, and lead to more of the same.” Sometimes I hate it when he is right.)

But he lost me permanently when he criticized the Cambridge, Massachusetts police activities in the case of Professor Gates’ arrest at his home as “stupid”. He was wrong, and I’m sure that he knew beyond doubt that he was wrong and stupid for saying what he did, but he never actually could admit, “Boy, that was a boneheaded thing to say, knowing as little as I did.” Because it clearly was. I don’t think Bush did anything as personally stupid in all his awful eight years. (Iraq was a colossal mistake, no doubt about it—a mistake on top of a lie; but Obama is going to beat him by miles and miles.)

The Executive Branch has no law making power. The whole thing, even going is a farce.

@CyanoticWasp Please explain to me how engaging our country in a nearly decade-long multi-billion-dollar war in which hundreds of thousands died is the moral equivalent of making a statement about the arrest of a friend that might not have been politically correct.

@UScitizen Please name one example of any “Marxist” transfer from any entity to any other entity made to advance the interests of anyone in this administration.

Wow, I don’t see any “lies” pointed out in your post.

I guess that’s the position you find yourself in when you make sweeping statements about a subject you’re not familiar with beyond 50-strung-together words. (Some people would call this “bearing false witness.”)

Let me know when you’re willing to back up your statements.

@UScitizen, really? Marxist cash transfer?

My fear is that Obama will do a fascist cash transfer, from the taxpayers to FEMA death camps. Hey, it’s fun to say things that don’t make sense and have zero supporting evidence.

Also, what is it like to live your life cowering in irrational fear? Do you sleep well at night? Do you need to go to bed huddled in your mother’s warm, protective embrace, a weak but effective substitute for actual protection from the evil Socialust Government?

Creating incentives and penalties. Our joint atmosphere needs a price tag. What does the US need most urgently? Good windows and better insulation. The effect will be far greater than fuel-efficient planes and cars which we need too.
