How to fill a Butane lighter that has cotton in it?
When I take the shell off of my butane lighter there is a flat head screw and another hole. If I undo the flat head screw it reveals a spring which leads to the flint. Other than this there is a little hole which leads to a bunch of packed cotton, I tried picking at it but it seems to be in there pretty good. I assumed that you’d saturate the cotton with butane fluid and this would make it diffuse to the wick. The lighter doesn’t seem to be working though and I don’t want to take any more chances lighting it in case this is incorrect. Can anybody give me advice?

I have a similar lighter, like a Zippo. You do saturate the cotton with lighter fluid, then it should light. However the problem i had was that my Flint was a pretty crappy flint, so i replaced it with a brand new Zippo brand one and it lit first time.
This Has lots of info
::edit:: You should be using a ‘lighter fluid’ not butane, i.e. this is what i use
Why do you think butane is the correct fuel for this lighter?
You don’t use Butane you use Lighter Fluid. It is a liquid that comes in a squirt can. Not a pressureized can.
I have a few zippos and they work in the way you described. Just saturate the cotton and it should light.
If it doesn’t you may need to replace the flint. Does it spark when you flick the wheel, then this is your problem.
@Whoever – “When I take the shell off of my butane lighter .”
@jackm – I guess I got it wrong, it is a Zippo and not a butane lighter, thank you for bringing this to my attention. I don’t have too much butane in it, can I still save the lighter?
@LeopardGecko
You should be able to save the lighter. If there is a lot of butane in there, take out the screw and then remove the cotton. Let everything dry and then replace and fill with zippo fluid.
