Why don't my shoes stay tied?
Seriously, I must tie my shoes five times a day when I am at school or work. They just don’t stay tied! I have been tying my shoes for a long time now, and I tie a mean bow if I do say so myself, but for some reason they always seem to come untied. I know for sure it is not an issue of the laces being too long and my stepping on them, it is also not an issue of them not being tied tight enough. But for some reason my shoes always come untied! I really don’t want to resort to the double knot here, that seems more suited for my 9 year-old!

@tyrantxseries do you think right and left have joined forces to take me out? That would really suck. It would suck extra bad because it seems every pair of tie up shoes in my closet is in on the plot!
@UScitizen, I’m not sure whether to laugh or take offense. Even though I’ve already been taken to school by an Answer Bagger, I am going to chose to laugh.
I have the exact same problem. Following.
Are you left-handed?
@andrew I am not left handed, however I have actually looked into this and I tie my shoes the way most lefties do. It was actually easier for me to teach my left handed son to tie his shoes than it was for me to teach my two boys who are right handed. I wonder if that has something to do with it!
uh-oh they are all after you get flip-flops
I tie mine like this, never come undone (bottom one)
Are your laces tubular and very smooth? I had that problem with a pair of shoes a few years ago. If you don’t feel like changing laces, I recommend looking into this method for tying shoelaces. At the very least you’ll tie them back super-quick!
Sometimes it can be the laces themselves. I notice if my laces are corded then they will come untied over and over. The flat laces seem to do much better for me. The corded ones are too round to grasp ahold of itself and slide too easy.
Try tying the foundation knot (the first little simple knot that lies under the main bow) in the opposite direction from how you now do it. This actually does affect the stability of the main bow, and you may have learned the unstable way. So if you’re currently starting with the left lace behind, for example, try it with the right lace behind. Then finish the knot as you usually do.
I have to double tie mine to get them to stay tied.
And @UScitizen it would have nothing to do with grease dripping from my hair as I shampoo daily.
They are out to get you SuperMouse! They are doing “team work” to untie them and send you “off the deep end” and then they can move on to a new family! ???????? I wonder…......... are they really happy with you? Do you treat them nice? For some reason they are wanting to move to a new family! Try washing them in the washing machine and a nice warm dryer! Might keep them hangin’ around for a bit long! Good Luck! lol
I have the same problem SuperMouse.
.
Look on the bright side…We can say “I’m not all tied up”
Why are you afraid of the double knot? Without them, I find myself on the treadmill with my sneaks coming untied and trailing loose laces.
Face your fear.
I am a double knotter and I am quite proud of my child-like knots. My shoes stay tied.
@UScitizen . . . please leave the whole “being a dick” thing to us professionals. if you find yourself unable to do this at least try to make it funny. seriously dude, you’re giving hard working “dicks” like me a bad name.
@gailcalled GA to you for using “face your fear” regarding shoelace techniques.
Wet Shoe Laces To Keep Them Tied. When shoe laces won’t stay tied, wet the shoe lace and then tie it. It will stay tied. ...
I have always had this problem and therefore have lived most of my adult life as a double knotter.
Until…
as Harp mentioned I began tying the base knot well, backwards. They rarely come undone now. Each and every morning I have to make a concious effort to undo what seems natural.
Also, my New Balance laces are cords that are sort of bumpy. (looks like a snake who swallowed ping pong balls) These seem to lock the bow in place better.
@gailcalled . . . Glad to see you paying “the craft” some proper respect.
Oooooo. This could also be a metaphor. My late grandmother used to use tons of euphamisms and colloquial expressions to make her points. Her most common was, “Well, I’ll declare…that young’n can’t even keep his shoes tied.” She was usually referring to one of her neighbor’s twenty-something son who kept making mistakes and leaving things undone.
Rub your laces with some violin rosin.
I’m a leftie, but according to my mother I tie my shoes like a rightie. They never come undone.
@SirGoofy: Among all the usual things I don’t have at hand, violin rosin may be at the top of the list, followed by chalk for a billiard cue, and a snake who eats ping pong balls.
