When you say someone has vision, or is a visionary, what does that mean?

Introspection and EDUCATION!
Someone who can see the big picture and a path to cut through base emotions to see the real issues.
www.TED.com gives some great examples of visionary thinking and ideation. Very thought-provoking.
A visionary is someone who is able to transcend preconceptions and see things as they are. They’re willing to scrap old models and look at a situation with a fresh and open receptivity. They are aware that things constantly change and that their understanding has to change in consequence.
Agree with @Harp, and I would add that “transcending preconceptions” includes being able to disrupt the mental habits and repetitive thinking which creates unseen constraints—that is, it’s not just that we have preconceptions, it’s that we think in patterns, and those patterns tend to repeat endlessly. A visionary interrupts his or her own automatic thought processes, and that makes room for something new to occur.
Although it’s already been alluded to in the answers above, I think it deserves recognition by name. Imagination. Imagination that’s free from the fetters of convention and personal deterrents, as mentioned in the other comments, including the fear of stepping beyond the comfortable as well, but also partnered with reality. We can get our house in order, but not really see the world until we step out the door. Although it generally arises on it’s own, after taking the necessary precipitating steps, I think it deserves mentioning. Imagination is a wonderful tool when used properly.
