Do people still carpet kitchen floors?

My home was built in 1957. all the floors are beautiful oak wood. my wife says her feet are cold in the kitchen and wants to install carpet over the oak flooring. i am dead set against this. i think it will be a waste of money, not to mention accidential spills. do people still have carpet on their kitchen floors?
