Did you have a nickname in grade school?

Asked by erichw1504 (26453points) December 16th, 2009

When you attended grade school (Kindergarten through 12th) did you have a nickname? What was it and why did it fit you? Was it given to you by your peers or did you make it up yourself? Did it go with you outside of school or was it just mainly used during school? Does your family know and call you by it too?

Do you still continue to use it to this day (if you have already graduated from high school). If so, how long has it been and who calls you by that name? Did you like the nickname or does it bother you when it is used?

If you could give yourself a nickname now, what would it be? If you didn’t have a nickname during grade school, would you have wanted one? What would it have been?

Mel (part of my last name)

Besides the derogatory stuff like racial slurs and remarks about the way I talk, Blackberry has been a nickname that stuck with me because my last name is Berry, and you can figure out the rest lol.

The boys in the neighborhood called me “Mousie” because I was very small. Didn’t particularly bother me.

I used to doodle a lot through school and had wee paw prints all over my excersize books, my friends at the time called me Snoopy. the name stuck till I left school.

tedibear's avatar

It wasn’t used in school, only at home: Boo. Allegedly, I liked to play peek-a-boo as a toddler.

@tedibear39 That’s cute!

tedibear's avatar

@janbb – thanks. I was called that at home until I was about ten.

I did not. I was called by my first name.

HumourMe's avatar

I never had a nickname. I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about that.

Mowgli. My parents had a difficult time keeping me on the ground, I would climb everything.

Marble balls (in my dialect) because when I was younger , my eyes were round like a pair of marble balls .

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

My nickname was “Lucy” after Lucille Ball. Some people still call me that and it doesn’t bother me for,“I Love Lucy” ;) I do have a few other nicknames as well….some of them good!lol!

Silhouette's avatar

Banana nose. It’s self explanatory.

downtide's avatar

I had a few nicknames, all of them made up by the other kids, and all of them cruel. Such is the school-life of a kid with a noticeable disability.

erichw1504's avatar

@Silhouette Your nose smells like a banana?

75movies's avatar

@erichw1504 I think she means that she loved to sunbath so much that her nose was constantly peeling

erichw1504's avatar

@75movies Or maybe monkeys liked to try and eat her nose?

MrItty's avatar

Uhm. Yeah. It was “Mr Itty”. ...

Axemusica's avatar

@erichw1504, @75movies If that’s her nose in that silhouette of her avatar, then I think she has quite a cute nose and wouldn’t be able to figure it out myself, lol.

My name is Melissa, and Missy is a pretty clear nickname for that. I’ve pretty much always been called Missy or Mohessa, but when I was in pre-school and kindergarten they called me “Messy Missy.” I had a hard time keeping things neat and picked up. I still do.

Cotton101's avatar

another nickname that i had was Head…will not go there!

“Chach” (as in muchachito, or “little boy,” named by my grandma when I was a toddler)...funny thing is, I tried to live it down after high school, and throughout college.

In my final year of studies in grad school, I collaborated with some old school rapper friends on a major theatre piece, and the professor/director cast them into the show; the rappers started calling me “Chach” and before I knew it, the whole cast was calling me by my childhood nickname for the entire production.

I stopped trying to hide it and let people call me whatever they wanted from that point forward…family still calls me by my nickname, which is just fine.

Kinski. Also, The Great Kinski. From my American history and psychology teacher. He also taught my uncle years ago and it was his nickname, so I guess it carried over. Then other students started using it. Not sure where it came from. Just that it’s adapted from Klaus Kinski, which kind of concerns me because he was known for being very angry and looks way freaky.

I had several nicknames, but I am not going to share them because I hated every single one of them. My friends called me bu my name, not a nickname.

DominicX's avatar

I was called “Dom” most often, followed by “D-Rom” and “Dommy”. My friends would jokingly call me “smallfry”, “shorty”, or something along those lines. Never minded any of those.

Bert.

I am a twin. My brother’s name is Ernie. So they called me Bert. Or guessed and guessed Ernie.

I never got called my real name.

Darwin's avatar

I had a friend in college whose nick name was “Bottles” because they weren’t big enough to be called “Jugs.”

YARNLADY's avatar

Yes, they called me egghead, smarty pants and teacher’s pet, because they knew it made me cry. I had a very difficult time in school all the way through.

Blondesjon's avatar

@Darwin . . . that is hilarious

Darwin's avatar

@Blondesjon We thought so, even when she sometimes didn’t.

live_rose's avatar

I didn’t have a lot of nick names in grade school though i have quite a few now. My one friend called me Greemo, and a group of my friends called me chuuchuunaku (japanese for squeak). I think it helps when you have a generic name like sarah . . .people will give you nicknames to differentiate you from all the other people with your name.

If i had to give myself a nickname i’d stick with the one my coworkers gave me . . . cheese . . . i know it seems lame but I like it

raylrodr's avatar

Nope, never had a nickname.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

Most of my nicknames were selected by classemares, And most say most of thrm were obscenek

Xann009's avatar

The only nickname I’ve ever had that stuck was my name shortened down to ‘Bren’. Very few people call me it.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

My first name is Rebecca, and I used to be called Becks or “the number one imported German beer…” I have no idea why. Now people just call me Doc.

Sigh. I may be short, but I’m not one of the Seven Dwarfs!

janbb's avatar

@Dr Dredd And you’re another one I had figured for a guy!

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@janbb Really? A few people have thought that. I thought the female avatar would give it away… :)

Charlev's avatar

I have always been Kevin…although I am not sure if saying a name in an accent can count as a nickname.. in Spanish is Ke-veen or Ke-ven (ven like Ken) and in Russian is Kye-ven…..........People of these heritages accent my name like that.

I always thought Kev was a good nickname…until it sounded a little too “I love you pal” when classmates at 6th grade were saying it…..What about Kev Charlev…I like it :)
