We once knew the Earth was flat and at the centre of the Universe, what will we 'know' tomorrow?

Asked by Starson (252points) December 16th, 2009

Throughout history we have ‘known’ so many things that were definite that we now ‘know’ is not the case. We currently know Einstein’s theories on relativity and Newtons laws of motion are correct, what if tomorrow we know they aren’t. What else will we know tomorrow?

if we knew what we will know tomorrow we would already know it today

We didn’t know the Earth was flat, we assumed it without any evidence. It just seemed to “make sense” without actually doing the math or seeing it for ourselves.

The Greeks before the Dark Ages actually calculated that the Earth was round. That knowledge was lost after the rise of Christianity.

That something “they” have been telling you to use, now causes cancer.

That mammography is always effective in detecting breast cancer. Oh, wait…

@drdoombot this was the thought behind my ‘question’, we are always learning and things that we think are definite today, are proven not to be tomorrow :)

That all this empirical evidence will actually show there is no god lol.

@Starson
The point is that we now use the scientific method, which has a much higher probability of being right as compared to a guess.

That the earth is flat and the universe sucks.

Maybe we will all learn what a sentence is, how to start it, and how to end it. That would be amazing.

We will know that we didn’t really know what we thought we knew.

we will find out all that death over religion was for nothing and it is time to move on as a human race for the better of us all , oh and climate change will change nothing

“we will find out all that death over religion was for nothing”

If not for religion they would/ will just find another reason.

Einstein showed that Newtonian physics was a special case applicable only in the mundane world. We may find that Einsteintian physics may be only a special case within the gravity well of a star. Warp seven, Scotty.

@drdoombot Euclid proved it by a simple observation.

Great question Starson. This is what is sometimes scary about science, that at one moment we will know and swear by something and the next minute it changes, this has happened numerous times through out scientific history! The only hope that I can give you, is that back then when people “assumed” the earth was flat (I say assume because they never actually KNEW this, they just assumed it because of the lack of technology, this is all they knew back then) they really never had any supporting data for this to be held up and never went through the strenuous processes that we go through now a days to prove a scientific theory. As far as the sun being the centre of the Universe, again, back then they never really had much more than very good assumptions to base their knowledge on. As science advances we develop much more thought out and tested ideas. In order to get a scientific theory passed in present day it will be neglected, denied, dismantled, reassembled and repeat 100 fold. I cannot say that this will never happen again, but I do have much more faith in scientists in this day and age then I did back then!

@erichw1504 – No, we will never understand Lady Ga Ga’s outfits.

@jackm – Yes, that is an excellent point!
