Why is lettuce used more often than spinach?

Asked by jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities (20019points) December 16th, 2009

A majority of the time lettuce is used in salads and other foods more often than spinach. When it comes to nutritional value, spinach wins hands-down. When eating a salad made of lettuce, you’re likely to get one of the really chunky pieces that are terrible, but not with spinach. So why is lettuce so prevalent? Is it because of taste (I prefer the taste of spinach to lettuce) or cost? What do you think?

You are going to the wrong markets or restaurants.

Well, maybe because so many folks just don’t like spinach…

I usually mix them together…

price and taste. lettuce has almost 0 of both.

I agree that the flavor of spinach is better. Maybe it’s the texture, lettuce can be crisper than spinach.

Some people do not like uncooked spinach. Also, lettuce is usually cheaper. I like both myself.

Because lettuce doesn’t give you a griity feel on the teeth.

Because spinach is more labor intensive in order to be edible. It has to be rinsed a lot and extremely well since it is much more sandy.

The labor adds to the cost. Lettuce is cheaper.

I’d say it is because lettuce, especially iceberg lettuce, is much cheaper (which is why we buy iceberg ourselves even though we’d prefer fresh spinach). Also, since iceberg lettuce doesn’t have a “strong” taste, it is more versatile.

Spinach is not crunchy, like iceberg lettuce. each time i go into the Cracker Barrel restaurant, i order a big salad made with iceberg lettuce and leave the spinach out of it. i love spinach only when its cooked separately and not on a sandwich or in a salad.

it is much much cheaper that is why I like spinach a lot more then lettuce as long as it is not cooked I dont see how people eat it cooked

some might think of Spinach as the green clumps in a can that Popeyes eats…and not the beautiful small leafs that are yummy in a sandwhich…so when someone mentions spinach a lot go “eww”

I think over the years iceberg lettuce became the norm and it is hard to change the taste of the populace!

And I agree with the crispy crunchy part, I can’t imagine eating sung choi bao on spinach nor does a bst sound as appetizing as a blt!

I do like spinach mixed in with rocket and assorted lettuces for a salad.

I love spinach but I also taste it as more bitter, dry and gritty than lettuce which to me is sweet, crunchy and wet tasting.

Lettuce, especially iceberg, seems to be the preference of many of my friends.

I hate iceberg (almost as much as I hate onions), and would much rather have romaine, or, even better, spinach. Mmm…

The sad thing is that there are actually some really tasty lettuces out there, but iceberg most commonly seems to be the base. There are buttery tasting ones, bitter ones, spicy ones, nutty ones… but unfortunately, you have to hunt for restaurants which actually use them.

Spinach is more expensive to grow, harvest and ship. In my family, the kids eat spinach out of a plastic bag, instead of potato chips, and we use various kinds of lettuces in our salads.
