I'm a 5'11" guy and weigh 190 lb. Average build (not ripped). Would you say I'm overweight? (I'm really not sure)

Asked by wmspotts (456points) December 16th, 2009

5’11”, average frame, 190 lb, on the soft side. I do run when I can, but I’m not muscular at all. I’m seriously curious as to when (at what weight) I should consider myself overweight.

Can we see a picture? :)

You’re a tall guy. If you weighed less, you’d probably look like a string bean. :)

Jude's avatar

I agree with @chyna, we need to see a photo.

There is no way of knowing exactly without seeing a pic of you…

But; I sincerly doubt that you are “FAT” ...

As long as YOU are comfortable with YOU; that is what counts more than anything else ..

BMI says you are….check it out….

I don’t put a lot of credence in BMI but who am I?

filmfann's avatar

When I was 18, I was 6’2 and 185 lbs. I look at pictures of myself then, and realize I was just a string bean.
Everyone carries weight differently.

also remember that muscle weighs more than fat!

An average amount of fat for a man to carry is about 15%-20% of his total body weight. You’d be a little on the heavy side if your body fat percentage was greater than 20%. Past 25%, and you need to make major diet and fitness changes. The ideal body fat percentage for a man is between 10%-14%, at which he will look lean and fat free.

I’m 5’11 and weigh approximately 215lbs. I’m at 22% body fat (down from 25%). Even so, most people don’t think I look overweight, though I can certainly see the extra flab when my shirt is off.

Thanks drdoombot. I’m the same way I think. About a 18 months ago I had gotten down to about 165 lb. with a very strict and healthy diet and extensive running. But as soon as I let up just a little the weight trickles up. I find it VERY hard to maintain 165–170 and tend to levitate toward 180. I’ve kinda slacked off a little and let it trickle up. It’s now around 185–190 from week to week. I’m just having difficulty finding a “focus” weight. I’m thinking around 170–180. Just wanted some opinions. Thanks.

For your height, 190 is a good weight. The 165–170 range is too thin. Muscle weighs more than fat so if you are working out and bulking up a bit, you will look great.
Also, after a certain age, no matter how much you work out, there will be a certain amount of flab.

I would say maybe you would look better if you lost 10 pounds, unless you are fairly muscular, then I would take that back, but since I don’t have a picture of you it is impossible to know for sure. By no means are you fat.

Can I ask what your waist size is on your trousers? I would say at your height 32–34” would look very good, anything more a little heavy, but again 36 is not fat in my book, just not ideal. 42–44 Jacket, also good, depends on your muscle tone again.

wmspotts's avatar

32 waist in jeans, 34 in dress pants, 40–42 suit size.

It all depends on where the extra weight is and also if your tone or flabby.
If you have belly fat, you are overweight,
If part of you jiggle a lot you are overweight.
However if you are firm all over and have no belly fat and your medium boned to big boned then you probably are fine at 190.
However from what you say your measurements are you sound just fine.

JLeslie's avatar

@wmspotts I’m thinking you are looking pretty good :).

You are 25 pounds over weight.

CorwinofAmber's avatar

Your BMI (Body Mass Index) is 26.5 (very slightly “overweight”). According to the Department of Health and Human Services. http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ I really do not think this ought to preoccupy your thoughts.

Need a new bathroom weight scale? Get one with body fat monitor. They are relatively inexpensive these days.

skfinkel's avatar

Not overweight.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

165 at 5’11’’? That sounds too thin to me. You might be slightly overweight, but I wouldn’t go as low as 165 again. I dunno, it is kind of hard to say without a picture, because the size of your frame should be taken into account, too.

Judi's avatar

According to your BMI you’re overweight but not obese.

Without seeing what you look like, I’d say no. My bf is 6’ 200 lbs, and he’s a bit chubby, but that’s how I like my men. I hate guys who work out.

rooeytoo's avatar

I feel best when I am lean, and the way I stay lean is to avoid sugar, and white carbs. Eat mostly protein and veg and you can lose weight and keep it off.

If it doesn’t bother you, then you are not overweight enough to worry, but I wouldn’t want to keep gaining, you should maintain because the older you get the harder it is to lose.

boffin's avatar

If you look down can you see your feet?

filmfann's avatar

@boffin Of course he can! He has big feet.
You should ask if he can see his dick.

wmspotts's avatar

haha. You guys are funny. I can in fact see both. This thread is starting to humor me :)

Well, judging by myself (5’10, medium build, not overly muscular, 170lb) I’d say that you’re a little overweight.

I’m right at the top end of the “Ideal” weight band according to body mass index (which I’ll admit is a poor scale to go on, because everybody is different, but still a general indicator). I just know that at 170 I’m a little flabbier than I should be. If you were to get down to 170 or 180 with some muscle on you then that’d be a good goal.

I know what I’m talking about to some extent when it comes to beginner weightlifting, diet etc. so shoot me a message if you want some help with a routine and diet.
