The Machinist.
The Sixth Sense – I consider it to be more of a suspense drama.
Requiem for a Dream.

Bully

Based on a true story. Naive Florida teenagers plot to murder one of their own, who has been too much of a bully to them

Dr.Strangelove frightened me a little. Sure, it was hilarious, but the frightening thing was that I would not be at all surprised if something like that happened in real life.

@randomness Kim Jong of North Korea taking the lead role no doubt!

Jesus Camp. That movie scared the fuck out of me.

randomness's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities Oh yes, I found that one scary as shit also. They should have called it “Terrorist training camp”....

@filmfann GA! I also found Lynch’s movie Eraserhead terrifying when I first saw it. Especially the parts with the creepy dinosaur-baby-thing.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Traffic
Pan’s Labyrinth

evegrimm's avatar

I agree with @janbb: Pan’s Labyrinth (especially the bottle scene and the scene with the eye-hand guy).

Also, The Magdalene Sisters. It was seriously creepy the way these women were treated. (I think it was based on a true story, too. <shivers>)

A French straight to TV movie I saw years ago called “Les Fleures Sous la Neige”. (Flowers beneath the snow.)
A movie about a young girl who is mistreated by her step mother.

There’s plenty of movies like that, but the fact that this one was low budget seemed to demand much work from the actors, so it seemed a lot more “real”.

However that most likely doesn’t fit the context of the question, as it’s scary indeed, but not in the way a horror movie would be so…

If you consider Eraserhead not to be horror, well it freaked me right the hell out. :/

boffin's avatar

Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein
“You can’t know life till you’ve f**ked death in the Gaul Bladder…
