Commercials...do you "get" them? Aren't most of them too creative or artsy and the end result is missed?

I don’t know what they are playing at anymore. the entire thing has kind of progressed in to some little madness that has become its own little world or something.
a lot of them actually piss me off lol.
I try not to get them Ray. It’s people playing with our “heads” sometimes and I don’t play.
Generalizing, they have become more intent to amuse and/or provoke than inform in order to sell the product or brand. Sometimes/often they step over the ever moving line of what is appropriate or even has anything to do with the product at all. Car ads are good examples. I don’t think anybody believes a car fly, it’s just for image and branding. This one wasn’t received well in Australia. Link
I find most commercials dumbed down and meant to entertain or attract attention with shock value. There’s the occasional artsy commercial, and I have to say some of them do miss the intended result.
There’s a lot of pressure for commercials to be artsy or clever because they have a very short amount of time to get their message across in a memorable way. A lot of the time a commercial can be more interesting than the show it’s interrupting, but some of them just miss the mark. The gap Christmas commercials are fucking annoying. They make me want punch a hole in my TV screen.
I get them. It’s “ironic” Gen X and Gen Y people coming to the fore in these industries now, and we’re a couple of generations of smart-asses.
Also, our generations are well-versed in TV-speak, so it’s difficult for us to take what happens on it seriously, hence the ads feeling like, “Hey, we’re not like those ads you grew up seeing! We’re hip and edgy! ‘Wink, wink,’ dude! Now buy this shit.”
I tend to like them for their artistic interpretations. And no one ever scores 100% of the time. There are bound to be many that miss the mark considering the amount of players in this field. I like them even if I can’t remember what the product is if the commercial is entertaining or pleasantly memorable. Sometimes the commercials are better than the TV shows.
EXCEPT: I hate the ones that make themselves memorable by being intentionally irritating. In my own little protest, I refuse to buy what they are selling. Ever.
The impact of TiVo and cable on commercials is beginning to be felt. We are moving towards having a generation of agency writers who grew up with cable and with being able to forward through commercials without watching them. Coming up writers of commercials have less of an innate understanding of commercials, and that will ultimately be reflected in their work.
Number one reason why I don’t watch tv.
Have you EVER gone out and actually purchased something because of a TV commercial? They all suck to me.
Most of them are cheap and boring and a complete waste of time.
