Getting PRK done in both eyes next week... what should I expect?

Asked by Georgia_Printco (139points) December 17th, 2009

So yeah, I wasn’t a candidate for lasik so I’m getting the PRK done next week… the doc gave me a prescription for loratab and told me not to expect to go back to work for a week… is it really that bad? I don’t personally know anyone who has had the procedure, so I thought I’d throw it out here and see if anyone has any advice or experience tales…

I didn’t know what you meant by PRK, so I looked it up and found this and this and this.

It looks like the recovery is a little longer than LASIK and your eyes will continue to improve over time… thus the recommended week off of work.

I haven’t had any eye procedures done myself. I looked into LASIK early this year, but since I can’t even put contact lenses into my eyes I don’t think I’d be a good candidate for the procedure. I’m an eye wimp.

Good luck! I hope you recover quickly and with as little discomfort as possible! Keep us posted!!

PRK is a great procedure. We do more PRK then LASIK here at our Eye Center. It is true that recovery time is a bit longer than LASIK. LASIK is often call the “instant gratification” procedure..you have it done one day and back to work the next. With PRK because the surface of the eye is purposely roughed up a bit, you’ll need additional recovery time while those cells grow back and will more than likely experience discomfort in your eyes while this happens. Most centers will put in a bandage contact lens to protect the cornea for 5 days, once that comes out you’ll fell so much better. At 6 months both LASIK and PRK produce pretty much the same visual acuity. Bill Sacco – New England Eye Center – Boston www.MyLasikDoc.com
