Why are we so gripped by the story of the lost Mt. Hood climbers?

Is it because they were pushing the limits, and lost their lives doing so? Or, is it just voyeurism in their deaths?

Who is “we,” and what lost climbers?
My wife and I discussed this yesterday.
I think we’re just amazed at people willing to place their lives in jeopardy like that.
I mean…just because there’s a mountain doesn’t mean you have to climb it.
(Maybe it’s just a cultural thing…)
@ccrow: Of course…how stupid of me.
It is the most climbed mountain in the world, and people do not take it as serious as they should it’s a difficult climb any time of the year – in the middle of a whiteout snowfall is not a time to start. The lodge offers a gps pingers to climbers at no cost & may pass law requiring one to be used by all climbers soon
@SABOTEUR I agree with you. My husband & I were talking about it yesterday, too. What pisses us off is the danger they put others in in trying to rescue them. If you’re going to try to climb a mountain, take responsibility for your selves & leave the safety of others out of it. Mt. Hood is noted for being very dangerous. Several have been lost up there. If you climb it, you may pay the price.
I live there and people get lost up there every winter. It’s not that high of a mountain. People tend to go up there in winter without proper gear, it’s got notorious weather, alot of people think it’s a day hike. They are going to start requiring people to take beacons.
