Asked by Unexpected_Rain (357points) December 18th, 2009

Hello!

I’m having problems getting a DVD to play on a friends PC, we’re using media player classic and get a huge error message when trying to play any DVD.

This is the first part of the Error message:

We’ve tried playing them in a couple of other players too but they all tend to crash as soon as they try to run the DVD. Media player Classic is the only one giving us any information on why its not working.

Any ideas on how to get them working would be awesome!

Which other media players have you used?

Kneejerk reaction here: GET VLC, OH, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET VLC.

In other news, it seems as though the media player knows something is there, but has no idea what it is. Big shock, I know.

What operating system?

Because of licensing issues, Windows XP did not include DVD codecs, you have to purchase a separate program to get them.

Once installed, every other program can use the codec.

That was my experience anyway. I recently re-installed from my 5 year-old XP disks and had to find the DVD software which came with the motherboard before Real, VLC, etc could play a DVD.

We’re on XP, I’m checking for missing codecs at the moment, its been formatted recently so that might be whats up.

And, I am now downloading VLC :)

VLC works! It looks a bit strange but i think i’ll be able to fix that with the settings. Thanks for the pointers guys.

VLC has been the one video player that I have never had luck with. I’m not sure how other people do it, but every time I’ve tried it, it’s been nothing bu t a non-functional pain in the arse.

I had very few problems with Media Player Classic, and those were all fixed in the fork MPC:Home Cinema.

Maybe I’m just a freak.
