Anything is possible. All I can say is hope for the best, but expect the worst!
There’s a word for people who rely on the timing of sex for birth control.
That word is “parents.”
The short answer to your question is NO. If you are having sex, with or without birth control, there is always a chance that you can get pregnant. So when you ask if it’s impossible, NO. If you ask is it improbable, then the answer is probably yes. It is less likely for a woman to get pregnant if she is not ovulating.
Also, having a period is not discarding a fertile egg…First of all, if an egg were fertilized, you would be making a baby. So what I think you mean is an unfertilized egg. Anyway, the material that you lose when you have your period is the lining of the uterus wall, not an egg. This is a common misconception that having your period is expelling an egg that was not fertilized by sperm. If an egg is released from your fallopian tubes and NOT fertilized, it dies and gets absorbed back into the body. Then, your uterine lining comes out as menstrual blood.
This is probably way more than you wanted to know. Check this out for further info:

It depends on the cycle. You can only get pregnant when you ovulate, and some women ovulate earlier in their cycle (closer to their period). So suppose a woman ovulated 4 days after her period (rare, but not impossible). Sperm can survive inside the vagina area (okay, I don’t know where they’re technically hanging out at that point) for up to 7 days. Again, unlikely, but possible. So yes, you can get pregnant if you have sex shortly after your period.
Also, women lie and they make mistakes. I don’t mean for this to be a knock on women; I’m just saying that it happens. “Oops, I was off by a week” are not words you want to hear.
3 days before your period and 3 days
after you are OK.
@chino2k; WRONG. I conceived twice after having had sex the day after my period ended. We thought we were safe, but luckily we were ready to have two children. My husband’s sperm could have been lurking until I ovulated; I’ll never know.
@chino2k: Especially NOT 3 days before your period. No, no, no, no, no. Sorry to be forceful, but that is not the case.
where does the sperm go to get a girl pregant
@mexican: If you don’t know the answer to that, you should not be having intercourse. (pregnant).
