Do you have multiple personality types?

Asked by Silhouette (8850points) December 19th, 2009

Personality types are general classifications of a person’s dominant way of relating to others. In each of us, certain traits are apparent in the way we handle relationships, approach work, tackle problems, and interpret our experiences.

In researching personality types I have found that I have a mixed blend of the four recognized personality types. I have traits from every one of the four possibilities. Is your personality the textbook definition of one of the four types or is it like mine, a mixed bag of traits? Which personality type best fits you? Which traits from the other types do you have?

Analytical Personality Type: Her reality consists of truths that can be weighed and measured. She is independent and works best alone. Her intellect is formidable, and she puts it to good use in seeking patterns and figuring out the hows and whys of the world around her. She embraces routine and predictability. She values knowledge, information, and facts.

Supporting Personality Type: The supporter is a facilitator and teacher. She is comfortable with herself and others, and is quick to offer advice, or assistance. Like the analyst, the supporter is interested in results. Her focus, however, is on the process, and on the personal growth that she and others experience along the way.

Emoting Personality Type: The emoter is a people person, too, but reality for her is defined by the quality of the journey, not the destination. She is highly intuitive and empathetic, tuned in to the emotional energy in relationships and situations. Emotional integrity is of utmost importance. The emoter values honesty and genuineness.

Directing Personality Type: She is assertive, confident, and highly independent. She is driven and authoritative. Her greatest strength is in conceptualizing, planning and implementing. She is equally at home with others and on her own. While the journey is important, results matter most.

Nope. One personality, many facets!

I’d have to say none of those personality types describe me, since I am a man : )

These trait-based analyses are, in my opinion, deeply flawed. Jung perhaps came closest to formulating a prognostic trait analysis, but even his has been discredited over the years. We are far too complex to be pigeon-holed so easily.

Judging from your descriptions, I’d say I’m an analytical dude. Much of my life revolves around figuring stuff out.
Fun fact: I would probably be a much more naive, dense, socially inept, generally incompetent and unhappy person now if I hadn’t taken so much interest in figuring stuff out during the past 22 years.

But as for the routine and predictability part, not really. I schedule my weeks where work is concerned, but in my free time, I prefer not to plan anything. I like to have the room to be whimsical and decide to do something else at the drop of a hat.

Those are my two cents. I’m not sure whether that means this is a good model or not.

@Silhouette
It’s not really obligatory etiquette to thank repliers by PM. :) Thanking people in the thread is fine too, if you really mean it.

I don’t think I really fit any of those four.
My Meyers-Briggs type is ENFP.

I think we have different personality types dependent on the environment and the company we are in. I would say in general I’m analytical but in my work I take on the role of a supportive personality…as I’m a social worker for adults who have learning disabilities.

I would say as a partner I have definitely got an emotive type personality but then when its that time of the month all that empathy and compassion etc…goes right out of the window lol…I just can’t help myself…and gawd can I be a dragon :-)

I took the MBTI about ten years ago, and about 8 years before that. I no longer remember the correct letter sequence, but the results showed that I was in something like 2% of the population both times. I was most like a teacher, apparently.

More specifically, I’d answer you by saying that the most dominant of those 4 types, meaning the one that shows up the strongest, regardless of who is around me or the situation at hand, excepting conversing via typing, is the Emoting type, followed closely by the Supportive personality type, then the Analytical type and, lastly, the Directing personality type.

The personality values assigned to each of these 4 types are exceptionally generalized, which is why you were unable to develop a clearer picture of yourself. They describe me AND miss the mark. Even though it does not test strictly for personality traits, the MMPI and the DSM axis IV did a better job. Of course, you walk away feeling gutted and filet’d after that, too. It is akin to being mentally raped. But on the whole it was worth it! The data it offers is indeed a prize worth the effort.

I am the heavy on the first three personality types but a little lighter on the fourth.
