Is it true that you don't have to tell anybody about getting VA disability pay.

Asked by sanbuu (94points) December 19th, 2009

I recently got approved by the VA for compensation, and i remember a rep on base telling me that i did not have to report it or anything. I just want to get others thoughts on this.

Yes. That is true.

Yep, disablility pay isn’t taxable. If you are recieving it along with your retirement pay, the only portion that is taxed is whatever you recieve outside of disability.

Let me add that most military disability retirement pay is non-taxable as well.

You have to tell the military if you decide to rejoin.

If I may make a recommendation… join the Disabled American Veterans ( DAV ) as soon as you can. They have represented me in my dealings with the VA ever since my parachuting accident. They do an outstanding job. : )
