Speed. I like to move fast.
For some, yes. For others, like me they are not there to replace walking, just shorten the amount of steps on a long flight of stairs.
Some Malls do not have staircases and you must take escalators.
I like helping the escalator. I like to imagine that all the people walking up the escalator is what powers it.
I like saying nuhhh nuhhh nuhhh nuhhhh while I do it. Then I’m a bionic man.
The point of an escalator is to put your foot ahead of you on the side thing that doesn’t move and keep it there til you can’t stretch it any further behind you.
You get up faster if you walk up moving stairs then by walking up stationary stairs. Your speed + the speed of the moving stairs = how fast you move. It’s like if you’re in an airport and you step on those moving platforms, they’re kind of like escalators except they don’t take you up or down, just across. If you walk across those you get there faster. It’s physics.
Also, sometimes there isn’t stairs to walk up and people have to get to places quickly so they walk up them.
I like escalators. Even if they’re broken, they still work.
@Booknight
maybe walking up one side powers the other side going in the opposite direction?
@Sarcasm That’s what it’s from! Thanks, I couldn’t remember!
I lurve this question and I lurve the fantastic answers.
I can’t think of a clever one myself at the moment, but I really really like the ones above.
I like to move fast like jaytkay, and I always prefer the escalator to the staris because I have this thing about feeling the bumps in the handrail-strip as you reach the top and it curves down to go back into the floor. It’s cool, like feeling someone’s spine.
GA booknight, gemiwing, and slices! You all made me laugh.
@EdMayhew hmmm, that makes sense to me. So my walking up is helping someone else going down. Thanks, it’s even nicer to imagine I’m helping someone on their escalator journey.
@wildpotato My imagination and I thank you for laughing. Not everyone gets my humor

I only walk up escalators because I always feel like the person behind me wants to do it.
I hum the Rocky theme song and bound up them… which is quite a departure from my normally arthritic and painful ascent on regular steps.
You still exert less energy than if you walked up a regular flight of stairs. Try it both ways and count your steps…
It makes you feel like you’re in Way too great of a shape to be using escalators when you’re actually grateful it’s there
