How do you set up an iMac for a 3 yr old?

Asked by rhodes54 (415points) December 19th, 2009

I bought a 1.25ghz “iLamp” G4 for my 3.5 year old daughter. What kind of ‘front end’ can I set up for her to play online educational games or click on her favorite movies (from our iTunes library)? I know I can create a Simple Finder user account, but how can I set up some kind of easy desktop with large icons for her to navigate to what she wants?

If you’re setting up an account that you manage with parental control, create shortcuts and enable apps you want her to use. Enlarging the icons is pretty easy; from the Finder’s View menu, select Show View Options and set the icon size to the biggest there is – you can also adjust the text, or choose to only show icons. It would also be worth setting the ‘Key Repeat Rate’ to slow (Sys Prefs -> Keyboard & Mouse).

@wildflower I agree.

Also, I’d recommend putting only a few programs that you want her to use on the dock, there are some parental settings in safari as I recall.

Alternatively there are blacklists you can put on your computer which block any browser from reaching a particular site. Programs such as Hostal will do the trick.

I’ll have a look around.
