Well, I am going to meet my boyfriends parents for the first time on Christmas, and I want to make a good impression. I want to take them some wine, but I don’t know what type to take.
I don’t want to spend more than $50. Do you have any suggestions?

For $50 you should be able to get a top of the line Oregon Pinot Noir or California Zinfandel.
Can’t give you specifics but we do love Adelsheim Pinots from Oregon
SRM
I’d definitely recommend finding out if they like red, or white first. My boyfriend’s mother doesn’t like red at all, some people just don’t go both ways on wine. Then look for something unique (maybe local or rare) and not too pricey. I think presentation is huge so pick up a nice carrier, I’ve seen super pretty cloth ones that can be reused. Another route is being able to buy multiple smaller bottles so that you can have a mini wine tour set up.
Youcan get EXCELLENT suggestions from the person working at the liquor store or liquor/wine department in a store…
You could always take both a red & a white!
Well, I know that they like wine, because my boyfriend told me that they have a wine fridge, and he says they like both red and white.
I love Lancers, not to sweet or too dry.
I hear cakebread is good. That’s what I bought for my neighbor who takes my garbage cans in when I’m not home.
All my wine friends order it when they’re out to dinner.
Unless you have inside info on what they really like in their wine I might suggest opting for a floral arrangement or fruit and cheese basket or bake some cookies and put in a nice cookie tin! Wine can be hit and miss but tasty treats are always welcome! Have fun!
@Cruiser So true. I hate it when people bring me wine I don’t like. I never know what to do with it and hate throwing it out.
Any red wine from Italy will do. just make sure it was bottled in the 70s.
@Pandora If I end up not wanting to drink something someone bought, I’ve found that it’s inevitable that someone will pick it up at some point. Or…you can use it as that 4th or 5th bottle of wine at a party, when people really don’t care anymore.
I agree with the above comments, wine is great, if your boyfriend has the inside scoop on what they like. Otherwise, it can be hit or miss. I’m mainly a red wine drinker, and I like most grapes except syrah, which tastes too grapy to me. I’m not sure that’s a word, lol. For white, I like them lighter & crisper, like sauvignon blanc, or pinot grigio, not so much a fan of chardonnay, though that is also a popular grape. If you do get the inside scoop, someone from the wine department in any local store that carries decent wines should be able to help you find something interesting, that’s not necessarily too mainstream, and therefore interesting.
Silverado Vineyards Sangeovese.
It’s George Lucas’ favorite wine. (and he can afford anything)
The winery is located in the Napa area.
The winery is owned by Ron and Diane Disney Miller (only daughter of Walt Disney)
And my recommendation has nothing to do with the fact my sister lives on the winery grounds.
I was going to say one with a cork instead of a screw-top, but then I saw your budget.
Instead, may I suggest you print out a copy of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 List for 2009 and take it to your nearest decent liquor store. See if they have any of the items on the list that fall into your price range and then buy that. Make sure to drop the terms “Wine Spectator” and “95 Point wine” at some point so they think you know what you are doing.
It would also be a good idea to find out from your BF whether they like red or white, or have a favorite grape or winery.
@Darwin I’d be willing to bet that if there aren’t any screw tops in that current Wine Spectator Top 100 this year (and there may be), there will be, in a Top 100 list coming very soon.
Cavit pinot Noir one very good red.
