Will you suggest funeral songs for me?
My best friend, Tigh, died on the 17th. I need help selecting music to be played at his funeral. His favorite bands were Metallica, AC/DC and Slayer. I would be grateful if anyone knows what songs might be appropriate. I don’t want anything that’s too depressing, but I also don’t want things that are too hard (although my best friend would have loved it, his family might not understand).
I’ve already picked “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica, because it’s very Tigh. We don’t know yet if it was an accident or if he killed himself intentionally, so I need to be careful about lyrics. I’m having a really hard time going through and listening to Metallica songs, because I break down when I hear a lot of them, so I just need help.
If anyone can provide links for Metallica, AC/DC, or Slayer songs that might work, please do. Thank you.

My way by Frank Sinatra, I know is nothing close to what you mention but still…
I’m sorry for your loss
I’m sorry for your loss, I don’t have any songs to share
It might be depressing for some, but I find it a very beautiful song. I’m sorry for your loss as well. My thoughts are with you and his family
Really great Metallica (mostly) instrumental.
To live is to die
I’m sorry for your loss.
Don’t Follow by Alice In Chains is one I have always thought I’d like at my funeral.
Sorry to hear about your friend :(
I know that this is not in the scope of metallica, but I always loved the lyrics
Fly to the Angels
Edit: Wrong link
I know words are shallow at this time but I am sorry at your loss.
My first husband was a musician in a rock band. When he died I played Knocking at Heaven’s Door and also November Rain (the lyrics are hauntingly beautiful) at his service.
Panic Switch- by Silversun Pickups cus id like it at mine.
Not sure if you’re going to find an appropriate Slayer song as they’re all pretty morbid and/or angry. However, they did do In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida on the Less than Zero movie soundtrack, and that one might be a good one!
I don’t think Slayer or AC/DC songs would be appropriate
I’m so very sorry for your loss. It has nothing to do with your friend’s lies, but “I’ll Cover You Reprise” from “Rent” is just amazing. Please listen to it. Again, I’m sorry for your loss.
@PretentiousArtist A lot might not think they are, but I know what kind of funeral my best friend wanted, and we’re trying to stick with his wishes. As weird as it sounds, AC/DC and Slayer would be appropriate just because Tigh loved them. Well, Slayer might not be, but yeah. That’s why I need to know if anyone is familiar with their music – in case they have something slow-ish and not too dark.
AC/DC has a song called “Ride On” that would work. That’s the kind of stuff we’re looking for.
@DrasticDreamer I’m so sorry for you loss.
Not from any of the groups above, but Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel would be a beautiful song to play.
I’m sorry to hear of your loss. :(
Everybody Hurts, R.E.M
Tears in Heaven, Eric Clapton
They aren’t quite the same genre, but it would add that contemporary feel that you’re looking for. Hope this helps you.
@forestGeek Yeah, I figured, but thought I would ask just in case.
Also, nothing too religious. I guess I should have said that up top, but I’m having trouble thinking clearly right now. Tigh wasn’t religious at all, and I really want to keep this as Tigh as possible.
@forestGeek I do not know where you found that but it is excellent.
Ahh, I was about to say “Have a drink on me”
As for Slayer, maybe Reborn?
How about Coldplay’s Fix You?
I’d recommend checking out Apocalyptica, a string quartet that covers Metallica songs. Beautiful, classy and appropriate for the setting, conveying the same emotion without any of the lyrics which may otherwise be considered inappropriate by some.
I’m so sorry, @DrasticDreamer. What a painful loss, and especially accompanied by doubts about whether it was intentional. I hope you find peace and comfort in helping to create this memorial.
If there’s a question of suicide, I don’t think you want to play “I did it my way.” Sorry, @flameboi, I don’t mean to criticize your suggestion.
I recommend Imagine by John Lennon. Might not fit, but I think that it’s great at a funeral. I’m very sorry, and the Fluther community is here for you.
I believe that hard Rock, for the most part is not really appropiate for anyone’s funeral service… Maybe ONE , TWO at the most if they were die hard rock fans…
However; for an upbeat song ; you might try “Spirit In The Sky” ...
Also; a little more christian , but kinda upbeat would be: “When The roll Is Called Up Yonder” , “I’ve Got A Mansion” and ‘Because He Lives” .... you can find them on most playlist sites and judge for yourself if they arte something you’d want at your friend’s funeral…
My condolences to you and his family ‘n friends…
I have suggested this before on here, but I still cannot go past Portals of Light by Falconer. I also like Fade to Black by Metallica, and The Spirit Carries On by Dream Theatre.
My favorite funeral tune would be: Where to Now St. Peter by Elton John
Dust in the Wind by Kansas.
Sorry for your loss. I would usually suggest something like, “Funeral For a Friend,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” or What a Wonderful World,” but those won’t cut it for somebody into more current hard rock. How about “Time Of Your Life” by Green Day? They’re legit and it’s a great song.
I agree with @jeffmbca Those are some good choices. The version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” done by Glee is insanely good. Unless you hate Glee. Then never mind.
