Prefrence of Christmas trees: Real or Fake?
Does your family, or you specifically, prefer to cut down your own tree or do you have a plastic one from like 15 years ago? Why? Is it just more convenient, or do you hate having to get a new vacuum cleaner each time you take down your tree? Pros/cons of each.

Real! I adore the smell of a Christmas tree!
There’s nothing like the real thing.
Fake ones are prefered with cats.
there is only one thing i like real…. Fake I hate the smell of a real Christmas tree and I can reuse it next year…Money saver!
We used to cut down a tree, but don’t seem to anymore. I don’t mind it too much, but it was a lot of fun driving down to Skyline to get a Christmas tree. It was a big part of my childhood. We would all walk around looking at them, but my mom would have to approve the tree before my dad cut it down and we would always take pictures there…lol. There are at least two pictures of us standing in front of the car with the tree on it. Brings back memories…sniffle :P
Also, I love the smell of a real tree and I love the feel of it too. Not the same as a plastic one.
People still cut down their own trees? I get a real tree every year at a local church lot. Usually I wait until about a week before Christmas and get it for half price.
I have my concerns about the money, and about the potential environmental damage, but I figure a tree farm is a pretty good use of land, and my tree gets mulched every year so it’s not contributing carbon to the atmosphere or ending up in a landfill.
Real. I finally put up a real one after 20 years of doing the fake job. The smell is heavenly.
Fake! Then you can reuse it each year!
@Snarp Heck yes people still cut down their own, that’s half the fun!
Where do you have to live to be able to cut your own Christmas tree?
I’ll take the smell of a real tree over a plastic one, thank you.
@Snarp All depends on how far you want to drive.
I always had real. I did not want to know about fake. Fake trees of the past were really pretty funky.
Christmas before last I put up a fake tree. I am hooked and you save time, money and mess.
Fake for the sake of the question seeing as I don’t have a Christmas tree because it can be reused and I would feel bad cutting down a real tree just because I love the smell.
OK, those of you who cut your own tree, where (as in what general area or region) do you cut it down in? Or should I ask my own question?
Unfortunately, I’ve never had a real Christmas tree.
My father has a fear of fire which is also why we never run our fire place.
So, we always set up a fake one.
My mother has the uncanny ability to make that tree absolutely gorgeous though, so nobody really minds.
@Snarp I live in a rural area of mid-Michigan, but we still drive 20–30 minutes to the tree farm
Had real for many years , but now like the fake ones.
I had a fake one growing up. It was hideous. And a pain in the rear to assemble. That’s part of the reason I get real ones now.
@J0E we used to drive over to Mich. and cut our tree down there. Then, we’d bring it back to Canada. Good memories. :)
The artificial ones are so real looking, I wouldn’t mess around with the real ones. Some even come pre-lit and very simple to assemble. I would rather pay for the tree once and be able to spend more $$ on other decorations.
We have the most wondrous real tree this year! Almost doesn’t need decorations and smell so good!
I use and reuse a fake tree.
I use a fake tree and decorate it really well. I have pine scents that are incredibly realistic. So the only thing my fake tree doesn’t have is kamikaze needles and a cat stuck in it.
For the smell, ambiance and feel i love the real thing.. even getting a bit of sap on your hands when decorating is nice…
However i do hate getting rid of my trees as I do tend to get a little attached (because decorating the tree in my family is a big deal that involves everyone.. even SO’s and a lot of fun, drinking and good times)... also the celanup is a bitch.. so the last few years we’ve used a HUGE fake with real pine scent…
It’s not as good as the real thing but at least i don’t have to get rid of it after a few weeks.
Fake for 2 reasons…the needles are a pure nightmare cleaning up out of our carpet and second my son and I are allergic to pine trees, needles. :(
We live in a single story home on a concrete slab. 7 years ago I jack hammered a hole in the floor, installed a skylight in the roof overhead, and planted a 5’ Norwegian Spruce in the space I had made. We decorate it for every holiday except the Fourth of July. There was a near sparkler tragedy back in 2005 . . .
Although I adore he Live tree…. in the past few years and the economy; I’ve used a 4½ foot fiber optic , pre lite treee…. seems to be working out prety well…
I guess to answer your actual question; LIVE Tree…
Fake when I have one the real ones scream too much
No choice! . . . . family tree farm
Fake. They can be re-used many years, take no maintenance, and don’t require a tree to be cut down.
If you can’t live without the smell of a real tree, all you have to do is buy a real wreath. Then you get the benefit of the real smell, without the hassle of a real tree, and without cutting one down.
When we get a bigger house we will definitely get a real tree. They smell like happiness, and we will either recycle or plant them when we’re finished.
I have a fake tree for now but I used to love getting a real one. The only reason i don’t have a real one is my dog.. Male dogs and real tree’s do not mix lol and even though my Samoyed is 6 years old,he never passes up a chance to mark a tree. lol
I’m allergic to pine so we stick to the fake ones. I love fake ones just as much. It’s a one time purchase, I can buy it pre-lit, and they don’t have as many holes or spaces in the branches.
