I spilled a LOT of liquid laundry detergent on my carpet. What do I do now?

Asked by LC_Beta (1883points) December 22nd, 2009

I tried to soak it up with a towel, but I’m not sure what do to next. Will it stain? Any help would be appreciated! :)

I would use a steam cleaner to get it up.

I have no idea, but I’ve just been waiting to say THIS QUESTION MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD! Andddddddddddddddddd I hope you get the detergent out!

aye yai yai… I am now trying to blot with a sponge. I am leaving for Norway for two weeks in a couple of hours. aye yai yai…

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Okay, sorry for the jokes, now I feel bad. Did you try folding the towel over a few times to make it thicker, then putting it on top and stepping on it a bit to put more force on the blotting? Maybe add some water, and do that a few more times with dry towels? That’s what I would probably do.

Drink until the room starts to spin, wait 20 minutes and add the fabric softener. Hang to dry.

@La_chica_gomela : glad someone is benefiting from my predicament, haha. This is why I should have listened to my mom all those times she tried to teach me domesticy things.

If you don’t have a steam cleaner, wet it down and use a brush or something to lather it up a bit, then try blotting with a towel (or more than likely towels). You’ll probably have to do this a few times.

One of those times when I wish I could teleport just to be a fly on your wall.

Still blotting… the best part is that the detergent is concentrated… twice the soapy fun x_x

@Shemarq – thank you, I will try a brush next!

@LC_Beta I am a certified klutz. If something is going to be spilled or has been spilled, I’ve probably already done it ;-)

Borrow or rent a wet/dry vaccuum-make it so much easier.

Fluthermucker's avatar

@faye But he’s leaving to pick up a Nobel Prize in a few hours, so he waited until the last minute to self-fuck.

Get the garden hose, soak the carpet throw your laundry, your pets and yourselves on the floor and slip and slide until all of you are clean !!

thriftymaid's avatar

Pretty easy. Place a towel over the wet place and walk on it until saturated. Do this until it starts to feel dry. Then alternate wetting the spot with water and walking on a towel. You will eventually get the detergent out——- and have a VERY clean spot.

lillycoyote's avatar

Lots of dry, clean towels to sop it up and lots of water. Soap is one of the hardest things to clean up, strangely enough.

Fluthermucker's avatar

@lillycoyote That is why soap tastes like irony.

Haleth's avatar

@minolta Or she could use a sham WOW! You’ll be saying WOW every time.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@thriftymaid: That’s what I said too! :)

thriftymaid's avatar

@La_chica_gomela. It will work but will take a little time. She’ll have a load of towels by the time she gets it cleaned up.

You may have to have that part of the carpet replaced when you get back. Soap in carpeting acts as a dirt magnet when dry. Even if you rinse it, it will have soaked into the padding on the back and never be completely gone. The amount of water it will take to dilute it could cause mildew in the carpeting.

Jeruba's avatar

Is the carpet installed, or can you pick it up and carry it outside?

I would love to watch what happens if someone turned a hose on it. But then, I think my all-time favorite card is the one that shows an overhead shot of a street parade with a huge balloon in the air and the caption “We wouldn’t be good at holding down giant parade balloons [Inside] because the whole time we’d be thinking about how cool it would be if it got loose.”

There are “defoamers” on the market that might make it easier to get out. You may have to get it from a cleaning supply company. A professional carpet cleaner will probably have some and be able to help you out too.
This Website says you can use salt as a defoamer. I have never tried it myself.
It looks like you can buy a defoamer fairly cheap though, even from amazon.com

@Jeruba, I love that card too! How fun would that be just to let it go?

You need to chemically neutralize the affected area first, In this case you are dealing with a lot of alkalinity. You should use an acidic solution(vinegar mixed with water). this will reduce foaming. Now you should inject water and extract repeatedly till carpet is free of detergent.
