You know...we hear reports of people dying, horribly dying in car wrecks, but....we never really hear how the wreck happened. Wouldn't you like to know so that you won't make the same mistake?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) December 22nd, 2009

Things you read in the paper, like, “The White SUV crossed the center line” or “Both drivers were left of the center line…”....OK did they both veer briefly, get distracted, and head into their death, or did the drivers veer to the point that they flat drove head-on into oncoming traffic? Or did both vehicles lose concentration for a moment and go slightly left of center and kiss bumper-to-bumper at 70 mph?? Was it a momentary lapse of concentration? Or…..did their left wheel just move slightly out of the center line and people died??

I ask because I read this on MSNBC.com….

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34526755/ns/weather/

So I’m wondering, “WTH??” There is suddenly zero visibility, things are looking bad, but the drivers…...they don’t have a corresponding reaction??”

99% of crashes are people who are tired, or shouldn’t be driving in the first place. :p

No need to report it in more detail.

I noticed yesterday that a lot of people seem to have a hard time judging where the center of their lane is.

Well they’re dead, so they can’t give those kinds of details anyways.

Most crashes are the result of driver errors associated with exhaustion, impairment due to drugs or alcohol and drivers distracted because their attention is diverted by talking on the phone, texting, eating, putting on makeup, personal grooming, changing clothes, distractions from passengers,

There is only one thing a driver should be doing while the car is moving: driving with attention to pedestrians and vehicles, and road signs and traffic signals. Doing anything else is dangerous and stupid!

Speed and Alcohol are usually mention as a factor in the accident.

If we all just drive sober and sensibly, there’s really nothing more we can do. Sometimes you’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time and accidents happen.

Yes, I’d like to know from time to time. Besides tiredness tailgating is another dangerous factor.

@PandoraBoxx I notice that every day, among other idiotic things.

Cars kill people – we should outlaw cars!!!

erichw1504's avatar

@stratman37 OK then, and while we’re at it we should also outlaw guns, knives, fire, cancer, etc…

Silly @stratman37 cars don’t kill people – people kill people. Unless of course we are talking about a Stephen King novel, then cars kill people.

After giving this question some thought, I believe I am perfectly content not to know all the gory details of how these accidents happen. I have heard the details of a particular accident that left two people seriously – life alteringly injured – and that is plenty for me to know I’ve heard enough.

That being said, those multi-car accidents happen a lot on the 5 freeway in central California. I always wondered why people on the road didn’t slowly pull off to the side of the road once the fog started rolling in.

The deaths get reported long before the accident investigation is completed. The investigation results are not considered newsworthy unless many people were killed.

This is why I don’t drink before driving and it’s also why I keep the cell phone turned off.

@stratman37 first I would like to go on record as saying your sarcasm was not lost on me. Second, when utilizing sarcasm on Fluther, the ~ is your friend!

@Freedom_Issues Not everyone dies everytime, even in the worst wrecks.

@SuperMouse Not necessarily the gory details, but more specific information on what caused the car, or both cars to “Cross the center line.” So MANY people actually do that, and not just when they’re drinking or otherwise impaired. The just glance away for a second and their car drifts. If the news were to specify that the car simply drifted momentarily, maybe people would become far, far more aware and more alarmed if they glance up and see they’re left of center. Or even close to center. As it is, people don’t seem to consider it a big deal, and I think it is.

@erichw1504 I would love to outlaw cancer. :-(
