How do I get rid of Fast Browser Search?

Asked by stemnyjones (3981points) December 23rd, 2009

My girlfriend somehow got something called “Fast Browser Search” on my computer. It’s something that comes up on Firefox where it works like Google and tries to search for whatever you put in. Now it’s starting to cause problems. I was just in the middle of watching a video online when out of nowhere the video disappeared and I found myself on the Fast Browser Search page, where it was trying to search for the URL I was just on.

This also happened when I hit “Show More” on my facebook home page, etc.

How in the hell do I get rid of this? I went into My Programs and deleted the Fast Browser Search folder, and it’s still here.

Uninstall Firefox, install Chrome.

@Snarp Is it just part of Firefox?

Some info here. I have never dealt with it so I can’t offer a suggestion.

I don’t know for sure, but my guess would be that it is a browser plug in, and if you get a new browser, the plug in for the old browser won’t port over.

Sounds like you have some spyware/adware/hijacker software on your computer.
Try Spybot-Search and Destroy.
It’s a free spyware/adware removal too.
It may be able to find and delete it.

@johnpowell Thanks, your link solved my problem. :)

@stemnyjones :: Happy to hear that.

Yeah, it’s amazing what you find in the “Options” or “Preferences” of a program. Sometimes scanning through there will clue you in to features you didn’t know you had.

@Snarp Exactly, and that is why I do not like Chrome very much at all. Sure, they tried porting over a few extensions, but not many and the ones they have are either lame or broke in translation.

@jerv Meh. Bookmark synching. Fast. Light. Dragging windows to tabs. It does everything I want a browser to do, and does it better than Firefox (so it goes without saying that it does it better than IE).

@Snarp To each their own. Let me know when you get image zooming, print preview, one-click video downloading, a functional version of Hyperwords, etcetera.
I actually do use Chrome on one of my machines and like it’s speed, but that is the only thing it really has going for it so I only use it for (very) basic browsing.

Using Internet Explorer:

Open “tools” in the menu bar
Click “Manage Add-ons
Vista users click “enable or disable add-ons”
Click “Fast Browser Search” and disable it.

Now go to your control panel.
Vista users click “Uninstall a program”
XP users click “Add or remove program”

You should now be able to select the “Fast Browser search protection”, and uninstall it.

Restart your computer.

Now go back to control panel, and uninstall “Fast Browser Search (MyTattoo)”

In case you haven’t figured it out, it’s the “MyTattoo” application from facebook that started all this mess

I did figure that out. And I can’t believe I was stupid enough to do that ‘my tattoo’ shit. I usually keep away from all of those applications.
