Less than 36 hours left and I'm still uncomfortable calling them the "ohs", "aughts" or "noughties" (the years from 2000 AD to 2009 AD). How about you?

Asked by Civic_Cat (530points) December 23rd, 2009

What would you call this decade?

What would you call the next decade: 2010 to 2019?

Seems that the “description” has become part of the question.

Zen_Again's avatar

How about the one-der years. Did I read that somewhere?

The zeros?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Twenty ten and beyond or maybe tweens and teens.

I am totally lost by this and wonder how it passed by the moderators….

Lets face it life’s not going to get back to normal until we’re in the twenties again.

@Civic_Cat: ‘tis the season evil2.
It is a legitimate question, and your answer would be appreciated.

More importantly: how are we going to wear those cool glasses this new years?

Something will settle in linguistically, and we’ll all get used to it. Like when a new president is elected.

I just avoid calling this decade anything. It’s like talking to someone when you can’t remember their name.
Now that I think about it, what do we call the decade of 1900–1909? I don’t think we have a name for that either. We just say, In 1903 this event happened…

That’s just hideous.

Not that the other ones were particularly pretty…

I’ll be rocking “oh-ten” “oh-eleven” oh-whatever! I won’t see the end of the oh’s in my life time. I don’t care if it sounds weird or others think it’s not “right” :P

ChocolateReigns's avatar

I think it’ll get called “the turn of the century”. It’s kinda strange, because in my head “the turn of the century means 1900 to 1909, but hey. To my kids it’ll be 2000 – 2009. They’ll be amazed that I was around before the 21st century.

@This is the third edit of this question.

The turn of the century and the second decade of the century.

I started wondering this well before we got to 2000. Not until it’s past will we really have much need to talk about this decade as a unit. I think the newsmagazines and TV commentators are going to have to solve this one before we do, and some term will eventually be adopted. The “noughts” would work fine for me, but that expression is much further from comnon use and understanding than it was a hundred years ago.

“naughteenies” surely???

@lynneblundell,
Sounds like some sort of video.

Yeah, recalling these years as aught-six or oh-seven kind of makes me feel like Gabby Hayes. (... “back in aught-six”…) I’m pretty comfortable saying two-thousand-two, etc.

filmfann's avatar

9/11, Katrina, Bush, Iraq.

The oh-oh’s sounds right.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@filmfann some good stuff did happen during the last decade, you know. Nobody really remembers them though…There should be some epic movement that will get the next decade known as a good decade. Hmm, now how would we go about that?

janbb's avatar

How about “the really shitty decade”?

Zen_Again's avatar

I like oh-ohs too, @filmfann – Happy New Year to you and all you jellies – in 10 minutes from now we start the countdown…

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

I’m not fond of the aughts, but I heard the decade referred to as The Nils, (nil as in zero), and I could get used to that.

Zen_Again's avatar

Well, it’s January the 7th.. I’m calling it twenty ten, and taking it from there… in a few years I’ll decide what to call these years; maybe going with the oh oh’s.

janbb's avatar

How about the “uh ohs”?
