How do you deal with the unexpected?

Asked by Shemarq (1494points) December 23rd, 2009

There are times in life when you are doing your job or minding your own business, or whatever, when something totally unexpected happens. How do you deal with this when it happens? Do you just freeze up, go with the flow, or ??? I would love to hear some examples of what has happened to you and how you dealt with it.

For myself, I will typically take a deep breath and figure out what needs to be done – almost like another mode. If it is a life or death situation or something dire, the shock will hit me after the initial situation is under control.

Here is an example is something that happened to a reporter doing a live broadcast.

What the fuck was that?

I expect the unexpected, so nothing catches me too much off guard.

The only thing an intelligent human being can do is to meet it Head On and deal with it… other will turn away and run…. and pretend it does not exist… Howver; the problem will STILL be there whenever youa re ready to face it.

Adapt to the situation at hand, and go with the flow. Freezing-up is not a consideration. :)

I pray about it and then go from there.

When you come to the end of Standard Operating Procedures, hit the dirt, lock and load.

Keep three things on hand at all times:

1. Flashlight
2. Toilet paper
3. Fifth of Scotch

I go into self preservation mode which might look to others as me running away in denial sometimes but trust me, there are things that can’t be taken back, can’t be unseen as much as we’d like them to be and I choose to face them either alone or work it together, whatever I think I can handle and still have more to win than lose.
