It’s not that more heat will go IN, but when you put the 360 vertical, you’re covering up one of the vents.
Design flaw if you ask me, plus, who doesn’t have room for the 360 on it’s side, right?
Lay that baby down and GAME ON!
I dont think so – mines been vertical for sometime and it’s happy :)
@xboxfan – I think you KNOW what I mean. :)
@Axemusica – Dang, dude, gimme a chance. I just got up to drain the lizard!
They were designed to work vertically or horizontally. You’ll be fine.
i always wondered about that since the new PS3 is designed to be horizontal (although it can be set vertical) all i know is that the 360 gets a lot hotter and is a lot louder and i haven’t touched it in 5 months or so…
@iwamoto I’m guilty of this too. My Xbox 360 collects more dust as we speak and the PS3 gets more than enough play, haha.
@iwamoto and @Axemusica are you saying that if i put it vertical it collects more dust and gets louder?
@xboxfan haha, no we’re talking about since buying a PS3 our Xbox’s have turning into paper weights, but @stratman37 does have the best answer IMHO. It does cover vents on the side which would make the only other available intake for air to become clogged with dust more often, but it’s mostly preference.
Dust on a 360 – that’s sacrilegious!
Based upon the pictures I have seen of the Xbox 360, I think the vents would be most effective with the unit oriented vertically. With the unit set horizontally, one half of the large side vents (on the down-facing side) would be subject to constricted air flow. (I am assuming the vent blocked by setting it vertically is small like the vent on the opposite side.)
Hmmm, it would seem that vent is actually the largest one on the Xbox. In which case, this site would have the best solution. Horizontal, but with risers to boost air flow underneath the unit.
(Other benefits: not having to worry about the unit falling over. Dealing with the disc loading tray is easier.)
I’ve done some temperature tests with an IR gun device. I’ve found the coolest position is horizontal with a 6 inch long 2×6 board as a pedestal. No vents are restricted. good air flow is promoted.
@Axemusica , paperweight is the right word, recently i turned it on to convince a buddy of mine to get a ps3, my words “and when i turn on the 360…can you hear that ? louder than 2 ps3’s”
thanks you guys, i will just keep it horizontally
