People on fluther: What do you think is the best way to bring about 'Peace on Earth and goodwill to all'?

Asked by lloydbird (8740points) December 24th, 2009

No comprehensive solution, from any one person, is being sought here (Unless you happen to have one), rather – a collective effort, comprised of the suggestions of the many, as opposed to those of the, apparently clueless few, who are running things. Perhaps we here can be of help to them in their seemingly never ending and (up to now) fruitless search. Surely we now, with all these communicative tools at our disposal, have the capacity to do so.
Please allow me to start the ball rolling by suggesting that a good starting point might be – a facility for forgiveness of past doings within the present ‘sick’ set up. After all, a sick society is bound to produce sick people (for the most part). If we can accept that most of the ills of society are due to its unhealthy orientation, then we should be able to forgive the individuals that have been adversley affected by it.
So what do you say, any suggestions?
P.s. Any naysayers and can’t-be-doners please hold your unimaginative tongues, please.

If everyone made peace within their families and with themselves I think the world would be fixed. When people are at peace with themselves and their family, especially, it makes the world better. Happier. When everyone is this way it makes them more likely to improve their world and others. The goodwill would abound. :)

The best way to bring peace on earth is for everyone to stop trying to save the world.

The swift and thorough eradication of the Human species. As long as humans draw breath, there can be no peace.

Beneficial dictatorship.

@StupidGirl So you want everyone to just stop trying? I think thats ridiculous. We need to step up our efforts not abolish them. If we don’t anything to help the world then what would happen to all the people who cannot help themselves? The oppressed? The hungry? The wronged? Are we just going to let them suffer? What is your logic?

I think that we need a worldwide elevation of consciousness. That’s incidentally why I was asking earlier about the Ayahuasca Experience. I was feeling kind of down about the state of the planet and was wondering if there were any hope. It seemed to me that before I ran off half cocked to save the world, I needed some guidance. I still feel that way, and for me, the best guidance will come from the other side of the veil, so to speak. On an individual basis, what more can one do than try to live a good life and help when one sees an opportunity. Kahlil Gibran said “It is good to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding.” But will giving stop people who are addicted to drugs from making poor life-decisions? Would not arbitrary enforced decisions that would ultimately benefit people with bad decision making skills be justified? You see, there IS no easy answer….

@Ailia: my logic is that when everyone would help the people around them instead of meddling all the time on the other side of the world where they don’t know how things work anyway, that would work a lot better (imho).

I’d have to say the only solution is to blow up the sun.

The best tool for doing this is to stop trying to do this. By trying to achieve such a global ideal, you alienate and anger lots of people and factions. Let smaller groups govern themselves and make pece within their groups. And then let go, realizing that human nature isn’t going to allow peaceful coexistance for long.

Mass killings of religious observers. Our religion problems would be over. Over population? Not an issue. Pollution? Too few of us left to do any serious harm. No more wars for food, land, ideology, pretty much solves all of humanities problems.
.
And I’ll cut you whiny %&*‘s off at the pass and say no I don’t support the idea, just throwing it out there.

The first step would be for people to somehow gain a proper perspective into the lives of all people in the world. That is something that simply needs to happen. The next thing that needs to happen is for all people to be able to control their selfishness.
Of course, this will never happen. There’s no denying that . . .

Education. Communication.

In reflecting about how to bring about “peace on earth,” these words in the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance come to mind: “with liberty and justice for all.”

It seems like there is “liberty and justice for some, instead of ALL”, If we actually put into ACTION the actual words, instead of just saying them, then maybe it could be a start to “peace on earth.”

One nation, under God….

Its very simple. everyone on earth speak the same language. this way, there would be no doubts and no miscommunications, which has started wars in the past.

Turn to God.

simpleD's avatar

Respectfully to @Kelly_Obrien and @LTaylor, nationalism and religion have been responsible for almost every war, and almost never, peace.

lloydbird's avatar

@simpleD I hear what you say, and I agree, mostly. Could this serve as a good example of what truly religious and truth loving people do in order to bring about peace. I’m with you all the way with your view on “nationalism”, by the way. And I don’t wish, by highlighting the aforementioned footage to suggest that I am in favour of or against the existence of any particular nation. I actually believe that NO nations should exist. They are all based on the principles of ‘divide and rule’.
No, I just found it heartening.

simpleD's avatar

Yes, @lloydbird, that is a great example of folks uniting under one god in the name of peace. When religious groups accept others who believe in a different god, or no god at all, and look at them as equals, and not as others, then peace can happen. Unfortunately, most religions have exclusivity at their core. “Mine is the only true god.”

lloydbird's avatar

@simpleDUnfortunately, most religions have exclusivity at their core.
Again, I agree. Religions seem to operate, superficially, on the principles of Divide and Exploit. Yet, within them, ‘good’ people are caught up. But yet – act according to their core nature. As evinced by the afore mentioned footage.

Appreciate the people who are different from you.

Random acts of kindness. Feed someone’s parking meter. Smile at a complete stranger. Talk to someone on the subway. Say “How are you?” with real meaning and concern. If each and all of us take small steps to improve each and every day for ourselves and those around us, maybe it will “go viral” and hit the “hundredth monkey” point.

The species needs a collective shake and a “What the hell were you thinking?” speech.
