My Flip Mino HD keeps saying "It's really Hot, Need to Cool Down" when it's cold to the touch?

Asked by jambon_777 (37points) December 24th, 2009

What do I do? It doesn’t feel hot at all it actually feels cold. I’ve tried using it outside and nothing seems to work. After 4 seconds it turns off. What’s wrong?

I have one question for you:

Do you Flip?

The hot part is inside.

My computer is cool enough to the touch that you’d never guess that there are things inside hot enough to burn you. When I screwed up the CPU cooler on my desktop PC, it would overheat and shut down in under a minute, but that 180+ degrees never escaped like it should’ve.

That tells me that either something got inside there (my desktop PC starts getting wonky like that when the heat sinks are full of lint, dust, and cat hair), or something inside got knocked loose, like when I misaligned the CPU cooler.

The thing would not be complaining about heat (nor even be designed withteh ability to monitor it’s own temperature) if it were not possible to burn the guts out of it, so if it says it’s hot then at least some part of it is.

Searching Google for “Flip Mino needs to cool down” your post here is the first relevant result that turns up. That leads me to think this isn’t a common problem. Best contact tech support at the manufacturer. Perhaps they can give you a fix for it.

The hot part is inside?! Really….? [sarcasm]

I just received mine in the mail today. Sat in a mail truck probably overnight, and it was cold last night. Got it, opened it up, cold to the touch, hit the power button. 3 seconds later i get a IT’S REALLY HOT NEED TO COOL DOWN message on initial startup. I hadn’t (at that point) even hooked it up to charge it, which is the source of other complaints, as the battery heats up signalling a separate message altogether.

Its a manufacturer defect. Either a thermal switch is defective or some programming is incomplete.

I am awaiting results from the question I sent the manufacturer. Chances are this is going back. In fact I have already printed the return label.
