Where can i find a beer Stein in New York City?

Asked by JesusWasAJewbot (1510points) December 25th, 2009

Started getting into different beers and microbrews and all that good stuff lately and wanted to pick up a beer Stein, preferably a metal one. I just moved back to New York City so not too sure where to even start.

If you’re willing to make the trek to Queens, there’s Alster Pavilion in Ridgewood.

The genuine German steins, often with elaborate regimental markings and ornate lids should be available in antique shops. They are quite collectable. I have one from my grandfather, who had served in the Brandenburg Regiment in WW1. The regimental crest and arms are on the stein itself and an Imperial eagle was on the silver lid. Genuine regimental steins can be quite pricey but there are reproductions available in the $100–250 range.I’m not familiar with the shops in NYC, sorry.

There’s also some German shops up around 86th Street and 3rd Ave, holdovers from when the neighbourhood was more heavily German, that might carry a selection of steins.

The truly authentic steins are stonware (“stein”=“stone”) with silver or pewter lids. The metal steins can sometimes affect the taste of the beer, especially the light Pilseners.

And didn’t they have glass bottoms so that while drinking, you could see whether someone was about to stab or shoot you? Or have I been reading too much Alexander Dumas?

@gailcalled: I think somewhere we have ones with the glass bottoms… I wonder where my mother has stored them. :-/

@aprilsimnel: My mother suggested the same area – Yorkville – but also said that it’s not like it used to be.

@JesusWasAJewbot:
You may want to take a day trip into Pennsylvania… there’s strong German roots still around the area. I can’t suggest anywhere in particular, but I’d guess that a web search could help.

Google “beer steins.”

@gailcalled Yes, I’ve seen the glass bottomed ones. By emptying the stein, “here’s looking at you”.

Or originally, “Stop looking at me and sheathe that dirk.”

@gailcalled . . . I wish I had a nickel for every time I’ve been told that.

I wanted to find one in the city, not order online.

There has to be a store where they have maybe cheaper ones, not the expensive authentic ones.

I bought my beer mugs at a junk store.
