How would I go about purchasing a communications tower/satellite to make money?

a huge tower that has cell phone stuff on it would probably cost millions of dollars. it’s huge and has to be erected, plus it needs to be on a piece of property (usually rented from property owner).

There are federal and local laws governing such equipment. Though the federal ones are consistent, the state and local ones vary from place to place. This isn’t to discourage, you, just to keep you from losing your investment.

The laws deal with location, proximity to specific types of structures, megahertz, wattage, and interference to other towers, such as cell phone and 911 communications towers. The good news is that adherence to those things will keep your cost to build and electric bills down.

Most cell towers are registered with the FCC. Many carriers have sold their tower assets to third party companies, and leasing agreements, have lease-back agreements. Steel In The Air might provide you with some background information about leases.

@vicnav, I think the gist of silence is that unless you have a bank of investors that can buy up leases, or own a piece of land that is a desirable location on a cell phone grid, “Own a Communications Tower for Fun and Profit!” is not exactly something that can be answered on Fluther. The financing and federal requirements are far too complicated.
