Does anyone have stories of local landmarks that have been demolished?

Asked by designer_from_AB (119points) December 25th, 2009

America is losing her historical landmarks at an alarming pace. These include homes, theaters, civic buildings, even hospitals for the insane. Buildings which should be preserved are being razed in the name of progress. I have been compiling a list of these from all across the country and I am always looking to hear more.
Thank You

Yes, by all means we should endeavor to save those Hospitals for the mentally insane. Perhaps we could make them into museums and amusement parks.

The greatest tragedy in Manhattan was the wanton destruction of the old Pennsylvania Station, which used to be a beautiful landmark modeled on the Roman Baths of Caracalla. It was razed, and on the site was built the bland and egregious Madison Square Garden.

I hope the developers who committed this crime have died of painful and disfiguring diseases.

Too many come to mind to even mention. The Empress Theater in Magna, Utah. It was featuered in Stephen King’s movie, The Stand. At one point, the crow is sittig on the top of it. It is the coolest building, but has been deteriorating one beautiful crown molding at a time. Now a local community theater has plays in the building. It would be a crying shame to loose it, even though it has been gutted and the ticket booth is missing.
