Did Guy Ritchie do a good job with Sherlock Holmes?

Asked by JesusWasAJewbot (1510points) December 26th, 2009

I havent seen the movie yet but im a Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. fan. It seems like the movie has kind of left the whole “crime mystery” aspect of Sherlock Holmes and made it into a explosions, explosions and more explosions type of flick.

Without giving anything away from the movie would you say that Guy Ritchie depicted the characters correctly? Did the story grab you or was it just something to laugh at and have a good time watching (which i can appreciate)?

I saw it last night and I was impressed. It was a little overly long, but they captured the essence of the characters well.

I have no desire to see it. I don’t want to see Holmes as Bond.

@willbrawn That’s what I was afraid of, but it wasn’t.

@Rarebear might have to wait, i’ll see Avatar again before Sherlock Holmes

Ive been scared of Avatar, ive heard mixed reviews for that as well but i dont know. All that CGI and the overdone story that the movie tells might be enough to keep me away.

@willbrawn I often go to movies alone because for me to go with my wife we have to get a sitter and it triples the cost. Last night I had the same choice. All things being equal I would have seen Avatar, but my wife wants to see it on IMAX with me, so I went to see Holmes.

I actually thought that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were terrific together, and Downey pulled off the character well. My only complaint about the movie was that it was about 15 minutes too long.

@Rarebear ~ def wait to catch Avatar on IMAX 3D, you will be blown away.

I saw Sherlock yesterday… my son picked it out, and it was very entertaining.
I heart Jude Law, and was not disappointed. Ritchie did a great job, as did Robert Downey Jr.

I haven’t read the series, so I can’t really comment as to how closely the characters were depicted, but it was a fun movie, allbeit a tiny bit long.

@JesusWasAJewbot I used to think the same thing about the movie, Avatar, until I saw it. It completely blew me away. I now recommend it to everyone. The visual aspect along with the message really made the movie brilliant. I thought it was one of the best movies of the decade.

I didn’t expect more than mancandy, and that’s exactly what I got! Thanks, Guy!

You are correct that the movie is very action-oriented. Holmes maintains his intellectual bent, but he applies his deductive reasoning skills towards figuring out how to best his opponents in combat situations, and the crime-solving aspect is downplayed.

Also, the relationship dynamic among the characters is different. In the original stories, Watson was in awe of Holmes, and that’s why he always went along with Holmes’ plans. But in the film, Watson only went along with Holmes’ crazy schemes to humor him. In addition, the directors took some liberties with the relationship between Holmes and Irene Adler (but I won’t say much more about that).

In short, if you’re a Holmes purist, the movie will probably disappoint you. When I watched it, it helped to think of it as a movie inspired by the original series. Then I didn’t get too upset when the film departed from the text. Judged as a film on its own merits, it isn’t bad.

The original was indeed the best, all the way around. its very difficult, if not impossible, to make a followup film and/or a film comparison to the original and this movie is a good example. lonelydragon is correct, to a degree. great answer point to her.

I saw this today. It certainly is a departure from the traditional Holmes.
You know how they took the original Holmes character, and made him a doctor, and turned him into House? This is like they took House, and made him into a new Holmes.
I love the old Holmes movies, and I love House, but this was just barely okay.
