Have you read the Anita Blake series? What did you think of it?

Asked by willbrawn (6619points) December 26th, 2009

Just curious, I have a friend that loves the series and highly recommend it. Anyone else love it? Hate it? What did you think about the series?

I thought they were pretty good. They need to hurry up and start making some movies before Holly Hunter is too old to play Anita.

I thoroughly enjoyed the early books in the series, but the later ones became venues for soft porn; minimal plot, flat characters, but lots of kinky sex. (Don’t get me wrong, I love me some kinky sex, but at least make an effort to produce a story line if you’re gonna write a book.)

What genre is that? Romance?

Fantasy, or urban fantasy.

Anita Blake was ok. Nothing spectacular or breath taking really. Then again I’m not all about the intimate details in which that series goes into. I enjoy more of books with depth and not necessarily lust and what not. But that is just me!

I would have to agree with Syz on this one.

I enjoyed the first books, but like people have already said, the later books just started turning into nothing but porn. They got boring, extremely quickly because of that. The Hollows series, however, is pretty awesome.

I have only read one book and some parts are good ex. action but I didn’t care for some others. I think to books go into far too much detail with Anita’s personal life.

I loved the first six books but found that the series progressively became trash over time. I read an interview a couple years ago with Laurell K. Hamilton (the author) saying something about turning the books into smut in order to shock the editors… but I say that destroying plot in favor of shock value makes for a bad author, indeed.

I’ll have to check out The Hollows series.
