How long does it take for a car to stop rolling?
Well, I’m doing this presentation, and I need to know. How long does it take the average sized car to come to a stop after rolling? If you need a speed, lets say anywhere from 55 to 75 miles an hour. I appreciate all responses, but I’m really looking from someone who works with cars, emergency response, or even someone in advanced math.

A. What car, and what is it’s weight?
B. What type of ground is it on?
C. Wind, weather conditions?
D. Are we on an incline?
Etc.
You should really do your own homework.
This reminds me of the time I was writing a story about a hit and run and I asked the driver of an 18 wheeler how long it would take to stop if he locked his truck brakes up on a person just as they passed under the drive tires. He looked at me oddly (which I expected) then after I told him the scenario, he helped me to figure it out (which I really didn’t expect).
It depends upon road conditions, speed and condition of vehicle, tire wear, and, in my case, approximate weight of the ‘victim.’ Fatter people provide more lubricant between the tires and the road, which means it takes longer to stop.
Alright specifics.
A) Lets say, a Ford truck. Take your pick. roughly 2005
B) average paved road highway or interstate
C) Very windy. Blizzard conditions without the snow.
D)Probably no incline
@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities Why do you think I’m here. I couldn’t find it anywhere. Same with a question I’m about to ask. You could answer if you want. How long to recover from a car accident?

“How long to recover from a car accident?”
That depends on what injuries you get. Most broken bones take at least 6 weeks to heal, but you can still have pain from broken ribs up to a year after it happens. Sometimes you never recover from closed head injuries, or if you do it can take years. And then if you suffer an amputation your willpower will be important in determining how quickly you get back to being able to care for yourself.
@Darwin Sorry. That was my bad. How long does it take to recover from an unexpected death? ie car accident. I’ve already got some answers for it. Thanks, though.
Highly variable. Factors that affect it include:
- Vehicle weight
– Exact speed
(p=mv)
- Tire width
– Tire pressure
– Gear ratios on the transmission (if the vehicle is in gear)
– Engine compression ratio (if the vehicle is in gear)
– Whether the car is idling or the engine is shut off entirely (if the vehicle is in gear)
(affects rolling resistance; “internal” deceleration forces)
- Aerodynamics
– Slope of the terrain
(affects external deceleration forces)
I can tell you that I have travelled >15 miles with the engine shut off and the car in Neutral before, and that I have also been stopped dead in under two car-lengths (too quick for me to shift gears) by sudden drivetrain failure.
@jerv that traveling >15 miles with the engine off and the drive train in neutral must have been mostly downhill, eh?
@camouflage_pants Yep. Sometimes cornering at speed exceeding 70MPH so as to have the momentum to make it up some small rises.Of course, it helped that traffic in rural VT at 2AM is non-existent since we didn’t have enough gas to turn the engine on if we’d wanted to :D

As long as it takes to run into something.
Until friction arrests the motion.
