Do Americans follow a similiar tradition of "rewarding" the first person to enter your home on New Years Day?

Asked by ucme (50047points) December 27th, 2009

In Britain we call this person the first foot to cross your door. They are usually “rewarded” with a drink or if it’s a child a sum of money.

First I’ve heard of it.

Of course, we also don’t celebrate Boxing Day….

Of course we do… the first person to enter our home in the new year… we charge with breaking and entering!

No, this is not an American tradition.

We do have some regional traditions like eating black-eyed peas on New year’s Day brings good luck throughout the year.

I’ve never heard of this tradition but it sounds rather fun. I imagine that as a result there is a lot of visiting with friends and neighbors on new years day? I’m going to pick up a little tiny bottle of liquor and some candy and surprise who ever pops by with my fancy international ways!

I get welcomed with a drink either way, but i do want to consider it a reward now :)

This is really the first ive heard of it.

@Marina You eat the black-eyed peas?! Oh dear god…I know their music sucks but you didn’t have to take their lives away…yeesh! Your regional tradition sounds dangerous. ;p

Only a UK tradition as far as I know.

@elizabethmae Soooo… if I show up at your door at new years day you’ll treat me with a small liquor bottle and candy? I am getting very excited! I’ll see you then.

I’m an American and I’ve also never heard of such a tradition.
The newspapers usually print stories about the first babies born on New Year’s day.
Other than that, New Year’s is just for making resolutions you are going to break!! :)

I like the idea of rewarding the first one to leave better ;)

My guests usually wait till after breakfast at about 3 or 4pm…

I’ve heard that the first man to cross your threshold after midnight of the new year should carry money on him to ensure good luck for the coming year. Also, the darker his hair and the more good looking he is, the better.
Also, you should kiss your love immediately after midnight in order to secure that bond for another year.

In Scotland the “First-Foot” was also to bring a piece of coal for good luck.
They would also be expected to be carrying a bottle of Whisky or similar to help celebrate
A guid new year tae aw !! Slange !!

@lucillelucillelucille Great idea!!

I’ve never heard of it but sounds like fun to me. But then the next 20 that step through the door for the party…......do they get to drink too? Or is it a one on one party. (the home owner and the first to step through) If it is one on one then the first person to step through the door better be someone I like. lol
