My daughter is getting a new phone, any recommendations?

Asked by mollypop51797 (1430points) December 27th, 2009

Ok, it’s her birthday and I am getting her a new phone. She is turning 13 this January. What phones would you recommend?
I would prefer a phone with free unlimited texting just so I don’t go broke! She prefers a phone with a QWERTY keyboard and one that opens. One thing she won’t be getting though, under my guidelines, is a blackberry or iphone/itouch.
Anything out there that seems reasonable? I don’t have a specific price limit, but maybe something that isn’t $300 or something too too pricy.

If you aren’t under any existing contracts, I’d recommend Sprint. The plan I have is doesn’t include unlimited texting, but for $5/month extra it can, which seems pretty reasonable. Also, I think if you sign up for a 2 year contract there’s a selection of free phones you can choose from, most of which have QWERTY keyboards.

Definitely go for the unlimited texting plan!

I think you need to look into which service plan to get her rather than which model/type phone because it is not which phone you come figure out is better suited for her needs but which one her friends think is cool.

My wife just purchased a Samsung Behold and loves it. lay down ground rules for your daughter and make sure she abides by them: 1. do not lose the phone 2. never loan the phone to anyone 3. trustworthy to never go over the minutes limit 4. make sure she understands and abides by the rules. we did not do this with our granddaughter and it cost us dearly.

I’m not positive about the phone itself, but you might want to look into AT&T; They have some great parental control options. Parents can limit their child’s ability to browse the web – even what time they can browse the web, text, call time, outbound calling, downloading games, etc. You can change the amount for each whenever you want, too.

I’d highly recommend some kind of Samsung phone. I never have problems with them and they last a long time.

Don’t get the Pantech Matrix. After one year of having it, it is almost completely destroyed, and I’ve never misused it. 2 other people at my school have the same phone, and they are falling apart too. Samsungs are definately good. My sister had one for a couple years and it’s still in good shape.

I am curious why you would say no to a Blackberry. There are some models (the Curve for one) that are about $50 and are quite functional.

And I concur with PThePH that Sprint is a wonderful service. Great coverage (I travel the entire US and have far fewer problems then my ATT friends), great plans and frankly very excellent customer service. I have been a customer for probably 12 years and have never had a desire to switch.

i was always anti blackberry because i had the touch screen treo and LOVED it… it’s super complicated, but i just used it for the basics (i didn’t even have internet). butttt i recently switched to a berry and i know you said you don’t want her to have one, i am curious as to why. it is honestly such a great phone. and all people who have blackberrys can “blackberry instant message” which is like texting but it’s free!!

Here’s why I’m against her having a blackberry. I don’t mind the phone one bit, but I think that the blackberry is a pone that’s a tad too old for her. no, I’m not like those parents who don’t want their children to grow up (I don’t but I’ll let her i kind of have to) it’s just that the blackberry has many uses and I’m just looking into buying her a phone and only a phone. But, I am reconsidering the iphone.

@mollypop51797 : that makes sense… iphones are pretty effen cool, i don’t have at&t or whatever their service provider is so i can’t have one, but if i could, i would!

Well T-mobile, is $45 a month, starting. you can add 5–10 + family or friends to talk to free day or night, nights are free and weekends. so maybe around $60 a month.

And if you can find a phone on amazon.com. & start a new plan, a $400 cell phone can be $10 or less.
