Have you ever bought a gift for somebody, but then wanted to keep it for yourself?
Well, let’s say you bought a gift for a friend, out of peer kindness. Before giving the gift though, you realize how much you like the gift yourself. So… do you keep it, or do you give it?

Every year, I buy candy as stocking stuffers for friends and family, and I always end up eating a bunch of it. This year, I only ate one piece, but last year, I ate almost all of it
I’m wondering what the situation is, that brought about this question and your previous one.
Not really. But the people I buy gifts for have interests and needs completely different from mine (I don’t practice gift-giving/receiving with friends. Only family). Also, I don’t have many desires, but the stuff I want, I go out and buy.
Just buy more to begin with.
Fortunately, I’ve realized it at the time of buying. So I just bought two. Lucky me !
Yes I have. More than once even. I usually end up giving it (or them) although I’ve been tempted to keep it (or them).
Yup, pretty much every gift I gave people this year were things I’d like myself, but I wouldn’t keep it for myself if the point is to give it to someone. If anything, I make a mental note to get it later. Maybe.
Yes, often the best gift is something you want for your own. However, I know what I like so I generally buy two of whatever it is.
It was a bottle of Ra Nui Pinot Gris. Gonna get me one next month after payday.
@Velvetinenut You have better willpower than I do. I did that and then drank the wine and told the person I “forgot” their gift at home.
I am eating part of Theo’s selection box as I type…(it’s a cadbury’s fudge)
but the other stuff (non food related matter) for other people – if I wanted it as well… I would buy two
A Francotte 20 gauge shotgun I had ordered for Meghan. Since it was built to her measurements I had to order one for myself and wait 18 months to get it.That was six years ago, I think the waiting list is even longer today.
Yep,
I’ve given my boss some stellar pieces of art over the years I really wanted to keep!
No. I usually buy something for myself and end up giving it as a gift.
That happens to me a lot. I heard the saying years ago that you should never give a gift that you wouldn’t like to receive yourself. So when I give a gift, I give something that I’d like to keep. ha. If I don’t like a gift, why should I think the recipient would like it?
Since i always buy gifts for others that i would like to recieve myself then this happens to me quite a lot but i do give the present :)
My wife (now ex) and I once bought a handmade stuffed toy to give to some friends for their newborn, but we kept it and gave it to our own child. Whenever I see that little bear, I have a slight twinge of guilt even after many years.
Well; yes, there have been times that I had gifts for another that I liked myself ; BUT realizing that GIVING is better than RECEIVING… I went ahead and gave the gifs and they were well received…
If I buy something for someone that I like, I just buy two. If I can’t find two, then I give it to them and I settle for something else. Just how I am. Maybe they’ll let me borrow it in the future, though. ;)
