Why is my hair coming out?

Asked by jdogg (871points) December 27th, 2009 from iPhone

Background info: I am a guy, 16, my dad is bald, my mom and her side of the family has no history of baldness, I have red hair, bad acne (which I’m taking the antibiotic tetracycline and before that minocycline), I eat fast food regularly (twice or three times a week), I hate drinking water unless I have too, but I love all other drinks. I use garnier fructis sleek and shine shampoo and conditioner and American crew “grooming cream” (pomade), likes too take hot showers. Don’t wear hats often. So in the past few months my hair has started to fall out sparingly, like maybe 15 to 25 hairs a day. I cannot tell whether or not it’s growing back. I have been taking minocycline for about 8 months then switches over to tetracycline for about 3. My dad said he started to lose his hair same age but very quickly. He also said he was put on acne Meds when he was my age. I haven’t been very stressed overall (atleast not as bad as last year). Should I be worried? Is there a way I can find out why this is happenin? What about genetics? And also sorry about going overboard with info, just want to state all variables.

Baldness can be genetic, but I recently read a Norwegian report that claims that it has also been linked to cell-phone usage, especially the newer models like the I-phone. As for your situation, I cannot tell you with complete certainty. I would suggest you check in with your dermatologist or your follicist for some suggestions.

I do listen to my iPod while I go to bed alot…I know this may seem paranoid but isn’t hairloss a sign of cancer too?

I think you’re just a bit too worried about balding. It’s normal for humans to lose up to 100 hairs per day, so 15–25 is nothing. They will all grow back eventually, don’t stress. :)

I just seriously wouldn’t know what I’d do if I went bald…I would probably get laser treatment or something, I just REALLY would not looks good bald.

Your condition certainly could be genetic, but I would wonder about the minocycline. Alopecia (or hair loss) is a side effect of minocycline, either directly or indirectly via drug-induced lupus. If you are concerned, you really need to discuss this with your doctor. At least you could be reassured if it isn’t too bad.

Is your falling hair leaving a bald spot, or just making room for new hair growth?

I can only tell you what my mother told me about mens hair. she stated that men receive their hair genes from their mother. this apparently is true, since my 92 year old mother still has a thick head of hair. what do i have? a thick head of hair. old wives tale? maybe. but, each time i look in the mirror and look at my full head of hair at age 66, i say these words…“thanks, mom”.

@jdogg nope cancer doesn’t make your hair fall out. The cancer treatments do.

I agree with most everything everyone put here. The only thing I haven’t seen is your age mentioned. For your age, I’m quite surprised you’re not losing more. In your teen years your hair goes through a lot of changes.

If you can, I’d pay attention to where it’s coming from. Similar to @Kelly_Obrien is it all coming from the same spot? Also, ask your doctor about the meds. Perhaps you should change to something else.

and for your future, eat better!

I’m a hairstylist and have seen many clients complaining about hair loss. I know that it’s unnerving to notice hair loss but usually it isn’t anything to worry about. Stress, hormonal changes, diet and a number of other factors play in to the health and activity of our hair. You are a teenager and your body is probably freaking out in a bunch of other ways. We’ve all been there. The number of hairs that you are reporting is totally normal. Things I’d look out for is patchiness, redness of the scalp, itchiness or any other discomfort. You can try a scalp therapy shampoo and conditioner like Nioxin. It’s a great professional line that I use in my salon. Taking a daily vitamin is always a good idea for hair, skin and nail care. Nothing heavy duty just a daily multivitamin. Good luck.
