My daughter had a pretty cool job. She was a wildlife rehabilitator, lived in Africa, and worked with injured and/or orphaned lions, cheetahs, monkeys, giraffes, etc.
@pdworkin‘s daughter wins. I can’t even begin to think of someone with a better job.
You know it’s really sad when you’re (meaning myself) so self centered you don’t know (or care, really) what anyone close to you does for a living.
That is, anyone other than my wife.
I have tons of pictures of her with various animals, which I would share if anyone had an impulse to drop a hankie
The best job ever is being a stay-at-home mammie.
GQ – no one is popping up in my mind – guess none of my friends have found perfect jobs just yet.
I’m in the entertainment business, and I know people with all sorts of cool jobs: Broadway stage managers, technicians, designers, actors, Tony award winners, all the way down to small gorilla theater types who are doing exactly what they love but not making much money at it. But I’m still trying to think of the best job. I know college professors who do research in Central America, the Caribbean, China, and the Arctic. Those are pretty good jobs too. I have a relative who works in county social services helping the indigent get the benefits they are entitled to, which is a good job, if underpaid and overworked. I know a high school math teacher, which must suck a lot of the time, but is one of the most important jobs there is. I know a pediatric intensive care nurse and a neo-natal intensive care nurse, again, overworked, underpaid, and really rewarding. But no, I still can’t think of a better job than @pdworkin‘s daughter. Oh, and I knew a National Park ranger, which is probably my dream job.
Mr. Lou Mongello, author, writer, podcast host, and all-around professional Disney fan. This lawyer from New Jersey wrote a series of Trivia books about Walt Disney World. Then he started a podcast, then he created a series of audio guides, a magazine, a trivia calendar, and more. While I don’t know him well enough to actually ask, the impression I get is that after moving his family from New Jersey to Orlando, he now derives income soley from his love and fandom of all things Disney. His trips to WDW are for “research”, and it’s how he makes his living. That, my friends, is the life. :-)
Me. I work for a pretty big civil engineering contractor in Ca. Carpenter by trade, but I also run heavy equipment. We build bridges, do roadwork, install pipelines/underground utilities, and do large scale earth-moving projects. Certainly keeps my work free from any boredom. Been laid-off for a little bit, but will be back at it in a couple of weeks. And when I am working I rake in about as much $$ as most people I know who have their masters degree.
The best job is had by all of my friends who are professional dancers.
The most well paid job is my best friend’s Dad. He owns a company which is doing a lot of the construction out in Dubai.
Nobody I know has a particuarly cool job. Although I do have complete respect and admiration for my cousins who are in the Army and Royal Marines.
My best friend from HS has a job as a drawbridge tender. He just sits in his little tower at the bridge, and when a boat comes by he lifts the bridge. It’s a great job because it gives him time to paint, which is his real passion in life.
My husband’s uncle works for the government. He’s had the same job for well over 40 years, and still no one knows what he does. Not even his wife.
I think that’s pretty damned cool.
an acquaintance’s daughter works as a marine biologist in Hawaii. I don’t know what kind of money she makes but the perks! No one has mentioned psychiatrists who make $350 an hour? I don’t think that’s a real job though.
@mowens
We don’t know!
I think it would be great if, at some point, we all find out he’s owned an ice cream parlor for 45 years, and the government thing was all a big joke.
the local weather guy
he flubs it up almost daily, has short work days, gets paid a decent amount, has local celeb status/perks (don’t know why!), and even if he’s WAY off, he still gets to keep his job
How many of us can say all that?!?
My dad owns a company that builds and services from very large scales that weigh tractor trailers to very small scales that weigh produce. He basically sits in an office all day and playes Spades on the computer while making loads of money. That is cool to me.
@knitfroggy You have just described my version of hell. I cannot imagine spending my life like that.
@Snarp Well, he enjoys it. So that’s good. I personally have a job where I run around constantly and interact with people and I love it, I just don’t make tons of money. I would probably trade it in a heart beat for the office and money!
Me. I won’t tell. I spent decades making it this good, and I don’t want to let the secret out.
My friends sister in Miami is the personal assistant to the owner of Bang Bros.
My friend April has a pretty good job, I think anyways.
Shes a cosmologist and she is also a cosmo teacher.
My friend David was the Chief Engineer for the Santa Monica Pier (including the carousel) for many, many years.
My daughter is a nurse but gave it up to be a personal trainer at a really nice gym. She puts on shorts and tennis shoes and , part time, turns overweight women into hot women. They love it and her and she makes good money. But her favorite job is being a great mom.
I have a good friend who for years worked as a bridge tender for the state of Illinois. He had to raise the drawbridge to let boats and barges through. It is a good job for an artist.
