What is that oxymoron you always hear that makes you cringe?

Asked by charliecompany34 (7813points) December 28th, 2009

park on the drive-way. drive on the park-way. what is that term or phrase that is so opposite that it doesn’t make sense? can you explain why we twist it that way? how does it occur? why?

The French have a lovely one; une jolie laide.
And Latin; festina lente.

Neither of these make me cringe, however.

At Christmastime you trim the tree (take away stuff), then you trim the tree (add stuff). I never got why “trim” was used in that way.

The classic standby “military intelligence”. Of course in this context, intelligence=information, not wisdom.

I don’t like it when some people say “I’m giving you my unbiased opinion on the matter.” If they are giving you their opinion, it is ALREADY biased. Simillarly, if they say it’s “unbiased” that’s untrue, because an opinion is an opinion, which is biased. Sigh. Another one I can’t stand is when I hear someone tell another “Act naturally.” When someone “acts”, it is not natural. Sheesh! Lol.

Everytime I hear Elton John’s Rocket Man I cringe when he sings “Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it’s cold as hell.”

I also hate when something is called an authentic reproduction.

simpleD's avatar

@AstroChuck: According to The Inferno, the Ninth Circle of Hell is frozen. Perhaps Elton is a Dante fan.

I find it annoying when someone cancels, say an appointment, and then asks for the appointment to be “put back.” Wouldn’t that mean back in time? I think it should be, “put forward,” again, as in time. I hope this makes sense to you. It does to me.
