Anyone have experience with hives?

Asked by Zen_Again (9936points) December 29th, 2009

Itchy hives that cover my body – once every few years.

I don’t take anything and they go away after a few days.

You?

I get hives from Luv My Carpet and freshly cut grass. To the point where I go to the ER and get shots. I hate it when my throat closes off- it’s annoying.

My oldest kid (3 and a half years old) recently started getting them regularly – he gets them if he has a cold or a particular hysterical tantrum, so it’s stress related, as well…we put calamine lotion on the hives, they disappear pretty quickly

I don’t know what triggers mine. My whole body is covered, but it’s my hands (between the fingers) that itch the most. If I get it in the summertime, a dip in the pool relieves it a lot and it goes away with 36 hours or so. In the winter, it takes a few days. No meds.

I had a bad cold and then I got it a few days after. I’ve also been experiencing more stress than usual of late. Thanks for helping me make the connection. I hadn’t had an attack in years.

When I was little, my mom would use calamine lotion on me too, as well as chlor-tripolon. I think the calamine lotion helps relieve the itchiness, and there must be something in chlorine that does something, as the pool really works miracles. As I get older, I find that it concentrates more around the legs and buttocks, as opposed to the upper part of my body especially the back and chest – that was when breathing was made difficult and the experience more dangerous.

Today, it just itches and makes me grumpy.

Taking a benadryl can help. I need to keep some on hand but always forget.

I have chronic hives and have had them for nine years and three months now. I take a daily allergy pill. On the days I forget them I’ve found that cold water helps and mint oil, both on the hives and smelling it helps quite a bit.

One of my kids used to get hives whenever he had a bad cold. They’d show up at the tail end of the cold. He’d also sometimes get them after playing outside in the extreme hot or cold, then coming inside. I think the quick temperature change would bring it on. Now he doesn’t get hives, but he still gets very blotchy after playing in the snow or running around on a hot day.

I still keep Childrens Benadryl around just in case.

Once I had to rush my husband to the ER for an allergic reaction to penicillin. He’d never had problems with it, but one evening he took some and within five minutes was covered with hives and itching all over. By the time we got to the hospital, his throat had started to close up. They gave him adrenaline and antihistamines, and he was almost immediately fine but rather high.

He also breaks out in hives if he’s exposed to a lot of dust, like from cleaning out a closet or digging around in the basement or attic. A cool shower and Benedryl usually takes care of it.

I used to get hives all the time when I was younger and they started up again about 3 years ago. I get them about 4 times per year now. When I do get them, they come on quick and cover my body from head to toe – are extremely itchy! There seems to be no common denominator to suggest the cause of them. I think stress may possibly play a role. I take a couple of Benadryl when they come on. The Benadryl knocks me right out, but the hives disappear quite quickly.

I get them in extreme instances of stress or triggered by particular foods. Nothing I’d tried topically has relieved the intense burn or itch except for sprays containing tea tree oil. Benadryl and Claritin work pretty well to relieve the swellings.

I get them from eating Cherries. They go away after 3 or 4 days.

Update: almost gone after about 48 hours. Last night I almost killed myself from the itchiness. Then today, slowly, they went away. Thanks people, and I hope you each find your cure. Health and happiness to you all
