What is your current job? Are you happy with it? If not, what do you wish it to be?
I am a full time student at the moment. Hoping to become a Neurologist or a Clinical Psychologist.

I have been a nurse for 40 years. About four years ago I changed careers and now I teach which I love.
I’m a nurse endoscopist. It’s a great job. Previously I worked in the financial sector which paid better (exponentially better, but money is not everything).
@Flo_Nightengale: That is great! I am a full time student now just like LeopardGecko and am going to graduate with a health certification to teach. I have also thought about possibly going to school to become a RN
I am a writer and editor. I like what I do very much.
I am a secretary and no, I don’t really like my job that well. I’d like to find something I could do from home or else change altogether and do something more interesting but here’s the catch: I don’t know what.
I am a student at Stanford University. That’s all right now. Unfortunately, I’m not exactly sure what I want to do. I have ideas, but there is no one thing that I want to do more than the others. I am majoring in linguistics, but I am also very interested in law.
I’m a medical transcriptionist and I love my job. I work from home and although that can be tough at times (the social aspect- I don’t even have a fish anymore to keep my company!), there have been so many pros over the years. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Full-time student wanting to go into audiology.
I’m a nanny. I’ve been with the same family for almost 6 years, and because of my attachment to the kids I love it. But I feel like I’ve grown out of it, since it was supposed to just be for one year before grad school. I’m in school now to teach elementary school, and I’m looking forward to doing something more professional and respected.
I am a Sr. Engineering Technician for General Motors. My job is to install new prototype systems and components into vehicles so they can be tested to see if GM wants to make them part of new cars. I love my job! I am currently working on things that will be on production cars in 2012–2014 I would tell you but then I would have to… No not really, but I just can’t tell you.
I’m currently a mum and studying philosophy…and I want to be and do everything… but I just…don’t…have….enough….time :-(
I’ll settle for deep thinker, floaty artiste, and neuro-bio-psycho-scientist thingimibob
I’m a primary care physician. It’s fun for now, but I intend to find another career if I no longer get satisfaction from this one. (Unfortunately, given medicine these days, it’s probably a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if.’)
This may sound odd, but I always enjoy reading about constitutional law cases. I took a great Conn Law class in college. That might be something I would pursue, or I might do something with health policy.
@autumn43 This is something I’ve thought of doing, because I would love to work from home. How did you get started? And do you have any trouble finding work?
@Dr_Dredd You’re a doctor and you’re seriously thinking about changing careers?
I find that surprising.
However, I can see with the new focus on government’s role in health care, where that would be restrictive.
Is this your day off? How do you find time to be on Fluther?
Until recently I was a full time student, but I just graduated. I now work for an environmental consulting firm that does ecological resotration. It’s a great job, and I get to work outdoors a lot. Right now we are preparing to restore a wetland and some wildlife habitat that was damaged by a nearby housing development. I love it!
I’m frantically seeking employment and I hate it.
I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO EAT!!!
Software engineer, writing web-based applications. I love what I do, but I don’t enjoy having to go to work every day. I have too many other interests, and working gets in the way.
Retired from State Farm Ins/coach and teacher! Loved to coach, teach, and ins..in that order! Retired early…age 57! Want to enjoy life while I still have my health!
@dani6119 I’m on vacation this week. :-)
I’m not seriously thinking of changing careers at this point, although I almost quit during residency. I’m just saying that primary care is a field of increasing paperwork and bureaucratic hassles, and decreased time with actual patients. This, I think, is true regardless of what health care “reform” comes down the pike. I’m satisfied with my career right now, but I can easily see a time where this would change. At that point, I’ll look for something else.
Currently military. Always dreamed of becoming a rock star or an actor… as cliche as that is.
I am currently a farmer/heavy machine operator/cowboy/lumberjack/mechanic.
I’ve always wanted to write but never had the time,
I am in construction but am trying to start my own closet shelving business…love doing closet shelving for some reason
Up until a recent car accident, I worked at a collection agency. It was awful. The at accident was almost a blessing. Once I quit the job I realized how miserable it made me. I am currently unemployed and spending all of my spare time planning my upcoming wedding. After the wedding I’m going to figure out exactly what I want to do in my life.
@Sampson I’m sorry. There are a lot of people in your position and it sucks. Makes me feel guilty when I complain about my job. I hope you find something soon. Don’t go hungry though, go to a food bank or something. That’s what they’re there for.
Good luck!
@Dr_Dredd LOL Well, then you’re excused. As long as you don’t have a waiting room full of patients while you’re playing on the internet. ha ha
There is so much more paperwork and bureacracy in just about every field anymore. My husband works as a postmaster in a small town and they just keep giving him more and more reports to fill out. So silly. He barely has time to help the people who are his customers. I work for a school system. Same story. Our state department wants more and more data tracked on each student and it’s getting to the point of ridiculousness.
So I do understand why you say that. I just wonder what kind of job you’d be happy with where you’re not going to find that.
On a different note there is the insurance challenges that we all have to fight with regarding health care. IMHO, they should just let the doctors do their jobs and realize they know what’s best for the patient. I understand about keeping costs down and once again something that is supposed to be a good thing (accountability) causes problems for both patients and doctors.
At present I’m fighting with my insurance company to approve my Nexium rx for another year. So my doctor will have to call in and talk to them again. They require this annually. Yet I know many other people who take it who don’t have to do this. Just paid out of pocket for 15 pills. It was $90. Used the last one this morning. Could get quite uncomfortable before we get this straightened out with the insurance yet.
@Gossamer – everyone needs to find their niche. ;-)
@ItalianPrincess1217 – That is one job I know I would never want to do. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and good luck finding another job.
I’ve been a sailor, technician, teacher, engineering supervisor and field service engineer. I greatly prefer field service engineering because I like to meet new people, see different countries, and working with electronic and electrical equipment. I have resisted promotion to office work and intend to do my current type of work until my body falls apart.
