PEACE FIRST - FUN LATER. What would you be prepared to give up?

Asked by lloydbird (8740points) December 29th, 2009

If that is all it (mostly) took? What would you give up for a while? That visit to the cinema, or sports game? That meal at the fancy restaurant or visit to the theatre? Would you forego that expensive dress or suit? Those, ridiculously priced, pair of Jeans or Trainers (sports shoes). What if all you fun-lovers had to do was to refuse to indulge, for a while and you could exert some real influence, would you do it? Perhaps the, unquestioning support of those institutions perpetuates the’status quo’. What do you think/ say? “Business as usual?”

Give up fun now… for world peace? If I were a miss america contestant… I would say yes! But I’m not… so give me that contestant right now for some good fun… before the world goes to hell!

Well being someone who often places too much responsibility on her shoulders and not enough fun I can say yes I’d give plenty up. Especially consumerism which seems to be what you are getting at, so long as I could still support my family (at the minimum).

But I don’t see how they are connected other than consumerism. We can still have fun and peace. Could we not create our own fun while giving up the things you mention?

Am I somehow missing the point here? the way my brains been working lately I wouldn’t doubt it

You can take my name brand anything, overpriced coffee and 12 dollar movie tickets. Just leave me a good pair of shoes and comfortable jeans.

I’m still not sure what jeans have to do with ‘you fun-lovers’ but I’ll try to roll with it.

I don’t think we have to give up anything for world peace. I feel it’s more about giving more of the things that aren’t tangible. Giving understanding, patience and knowledge. Giving food couldn’t hurt however.

Well the reason there is starvation at all in the world has much to do with 20% of the world consuming 80% of its resources and using the Third World like an expendable commodity. The reason we have $150.00 Nike sneakers is because and Indonesian boy makes them for 50 cents a piece because the factory is the only game in his town. The factory which years ago along with other Western industries displaced local cottage industries and agriculture because the locals were viewed as beasts of burden/cheap labor. Soon they were dependent upon these foreign industries. Imagine if he could make 2.00 a piece or if we were willing to pay 165.00 for that pair. Or if we would stop supporting such practices as unfair labor practices altogether. So our sacrifices have much to do with world peace. Peace which starts first and foremost from world justice.

@SeventhSense I’m well aware of slave labor around the world. It’s why I don’t buy those things. That’s not a sacrifice to me. A sacrifice would mean going without something important.

I don’t do any theatre going, I wear ‘mom’ jeans so what fun can I give up? Even if we all gave up pricey fun stuff and donated the money, isn’t that lining the pockets instead of going to the needers? I have a foster child [foster parents plan of Canada] and hope the money is being used properly. But if it worked, I sure would.
